My light is located right smack in the middle above the mileage It's has a circular arrow & it says "4x4" in side the 3/4 circle.

SAV still @ the dealer.....they're busy cuz of the holiday so they said it may take a couple days to diagnose it. i'll let you know later!!

I think that the 2003 and older X5's did not have the Xdrive all whell drive, but another system. This may have something to do with the 4x4 light. Does it have a button that says DSC.

Different markets used different symbols on the dash (my Canadian owners manual showed several variants). My 2003 pre-X drive X5 had the 4x4 light.

The 4x4 light will only illuminate when DSC is turned off, it essentially is saying "you only have 4x4 and not DSC". It is a silly choice of phrase, as most owners don't associate the X5 with true 4x4s. Also, several people have reported being confused and turned DSC off in a vain attempt to put the X5 in 4x4 mode, not realizing that it is a full time all wheel drive vehicle.
