I turn the key and NOTHING

Again. No clicks, no whines, no cranks, nothing. I seem to be on a two month rotation. It happened the end of July, the end of September and I missed the end of November by 2 days.

If it was the alternator, it wouldn't be so sporadic, would it?

NeaMarin 12-02-2007 02:43 PM

Did the key work when you tried to unlock your vehicle ? I`m thinking that it might be the battery inside the key...

Wagner 12-02-2007 03:11 PM

can you turn your lights on?

jimbeattie 12-02-2007 05:19 PM

It sounds to me like your battery isn't holding a charge well and is gradually running down. It seems a little early if it's the 2005 you're talking about, but it sounds just like my experience last year. I charged the battery up and everything was fine for a while and then it got weaker. I still haven't got around to installing a new battery but I now keep an emergency starter in the car and I have a solar panel to keep the battery charged up. It was -10 centigrade last night and the car was covered in ice under 4 " of snow, there was still enough juice to start it. I know, I'm living on borrowed time.

UCrewX5 12-02-2007 05:24 PM

Try taking the shifter out of park and putting it back into park again. Could be the sensor isn't detecting you have it in park, which would prevent the vehicle from turning over.

2002Silver4.6is 12-02-2007 05:24 PM

What was the issue the two other times? if it did not happen so regularly I would think it is the chip in the key....

cmyX6go 12-02-2007 05:46 PM

The key did unlock the door. As far as the previous occassions, the first time they couldn't find anything. They said the battery was fine, they looked but didn't find anything draining it. The alternator was also OK. The last time they changed the battery, so my battery is only 2 months old. I will go check to see if the headlights go on and try the shifter thing.

cmyX6go 12-02-2007 06:23 PM

In my professional opinion  something drained the battery. She is stone cold dead. No lights, no horn, the remote didn't even work this time to open the door.

noncom23 12-02-2007 06:50 PM

Probably not going into sleep mode...http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...om23/sleep.gif

AutoXer 12-02-2007 08:12 PM

Sorry L, sounds like you have a short somewhere that is draining the battery!

Good thing it's still under warranty. Time to go yell at the dealer!

Thunder22 12-02-2007 09:19 PM

I wonder if the thermostat has gone bad and the fan is staying on too long once you turn the car off.....

motordavid 12-02-2007 09:20 PM

From afar, I'd guess a dead short, probably electronically glitched on
occasion, as opposed to the old fashion "dead short", a result of your post
crash re-do.
A really A-O, careful tech can track it down.
GL, L!

That's what I was thinking. Maybe you should give BMW Roadside Assistance a call (or your dealer SA) & have them flatbed it to the dealer... Shorts can be hard to find but if the tech is good he should be able to take care of it... GL & let us know how you make out...

Certainly could be...

I've never heard the fan in my X running after I shut it off (and I would - the garage is just through the kitchen door...), but I understand it can do this. Is this common or is that just not functioning on my X?

BTW L - Have you been using the aux heat alot (and the aux vent in summer)? I have a feeling that's what killed my battery last year...

cmyX6go 12-03-2007 05:37 AM

I haven't been running the aux air or heat. I have not heard the fan running after I turn her off.

My park distance control and my roof have been acting weird. The PDC immediately goes off when I put her in reverse when there is nothing behind me and doesn't beep when there is something there. This time of the year I keep the roof partially open. Frequently when I try to close it, it goes further back instead of closing. I didn't think they were big issues and was waiting until things calmed down at work to make a service appointment.

The first time this happened was before the accident. The kid who was checking her in walked around the X 4 fookin times with the clipboard in hand. I dared him to find a mark on her. :tsk: 3 days later......You know the rest

I am undecided as to whether I should try to jump the battery instead of waiting for a flat bed. (I really don't have time for this today) Is that foolish being there's a short? Can she die while I'm driving?

EDIT: Decided to play it safe and call Assist. I'm waiting for the flat bed.

Ut oh...

This can't be good. Just spoke to my SA who said something BIG is going on with my girl. Electrical.....:yikes:

I'll get the details later when I go pick up a loaner

I'm just now thinking maybe it's time to bail and abort the waiting for X6 mission. Get the E70 for 2 years and X6 next time around.

Decisions....decisions :dunno: What are the chances that whatever this electrical issue is will be resolved first time around?

Good luck but don't rush. Get exactly what you want.

cmyX6go 12-06-2007 03:58 PM

They can't find it, don't know what it is. There's a short or a chaffed wire somewhere. Sounds like looking for a needle in a haystack to me

rayxi 12-06-2007 04:37 PM

They should be able to isolate the leak to a specific fuse circuit at least. They could put a current meter on the battery, pull the fuses on the 'always on' stuff like alarm, door locks, power seats etc. If it still draws current then start pulling fuses one by one until they find the right one that stops the current drain. Then it's a matter of cross referencing the things on that circuit with the work that was done on it recently for some likely candidates.

Of course, if the drain is with any of the 'always on' stuff then that's a little trickier. Hmm, that new E70 is starting to sound like a plan.

Once you get used to higher SUV seating position, its not easy to go back. ;)

What happened to the X6?

Wagner 12-07-2007 10:01 PM

too long a wait.

I talked myself out of it, for now anyway. The electrical issues I'm having were the turning point. If I put the "I want" part aside, it makes more sense to wait it out.

I won't be a first MY guinea pig
I won't have to pay a ridiculous price for being a guinea pig
The timing will put me in a 2nd MY X6 avoiding the two statements above

I think you might have a lemon on your hands. Check into the lemon laws in your state. In general if a vehicle goes in for service for the same problem multiple times (varies by state) and the dealer cannot correct the issue the vehicle is a lemon.

cmyX6go 12-10-2007 12:12 PM

Turns out it was the CCE (?) unit.
