TIE RODS
 

Hi Guys, I need HELP. My X5 4.4 hit a curb this weekend due to the snow. Damage : Tie Rods of the driver side wheel have bended. Solution: Need to replace the outer and inner tie rods and unfortunately unlike the US Cars where they have outer and inner tie rods, X5 has only outer tie rod and the inner is connected to the whole assembly that is costing me $ 2000 to get. I feel no good by seeing the damge, just for hitting the curb(at 20-30 km) its gonna cost me $ 2500.
Anyone can suggest something else I can do or there is no way other than to buy the whole unit.

Hey Guys, Went to BMW dealer after getting help from www.realoem.com and asked for the parts and got the vehicle fixed and let that guy have it who was trying to con me. Is available as a steering assemly to tie rods.

the first gen X5 has inner and outer you can remove. but the rack itself is likely to give you problems by 80k miles.

Just replace the tie rods/ends by yourself. I'm sure the parts aren't going to cost $2500. If you need one just get a chilton manual for instruction. I just replaced the tie rods on a Ford pickup and it took me less than an hour. I know the X will be different but the principle is the same.

Hey Guys,
I went to get an alignment and the dealer said that he could not complete the process because the tie rods had siezed up. He wanted me to get them replaced at $800 or so. What parts did you order and it is really all that simple? I've replaced by brakes (pads, rotors and sensors) as well as some other parts where there was a pictorial DIY. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the dealer is full of bullshit. Go online and find tie rod ends and do it yourself. Yes it is simple if you've done brakes etc.
