Air suspension?
 

Hi all,

I have a 3.0d sport it has the self levelling front and rear axles, I think the 4.8 have this as standard. Is this suspension "air suspension" as they have in the discovery and Range Rover?

it's similar, but the X5 is more designed for light off-roading...like going over gravel, the air suspension in the Land Rovers are designed for heavy off-roading and have a bit more travel / articulation as well as selectable off-road programs for the traction control and the diffs

Thanks for the response mrkbbd, so it is fair to say that it has all round air suspension?

if you have a switch on the right (you're in the UK so I'm assuming right-hand drive) with three green lights next to the headlight control then you have the adjustable full air suspension, if not you just have auto-leveling rear suspension, which just compensates for heavy loads

cool thanks again. I do have the switch so it's all air which is rare on anything other than a 4.8 :)

Does the rear air suspension also compensate for roll or lean angle when cornering or is it simply for the compensation of heavy loads?

I have an 02 E53 X5 3.0d euro. I assume I also have air suspension in both front and rear. Is my understanding correct ?

only if you have the self levelling axle front and rear as mentioned before if you have the switch which lowers or raises the ride height then yes you have

I believe it just compensates, I don't even think the full air suspension does that

Does anyone know for certain what the function of the rear air suspension is?

the rear air suspension is just self-leveling, that's the only reason it has it, I believe you get an extra 1000lbs towing capacity with it

Thank you Mrkbbd! Was the self leveling rear suspension an option on all X5's? Was it mandatory on the 4.6is?

Could the rear air suspension be removed? Would it be a pain to reprogram the computer?

I know I will not be putting in any heavy loads or towing with the X5. Upside would be not having another system that could have a part break and that very heavy pump would be out of the vehicle.

early 4.4s and all 4.6is's have rear air suspension, it was optional on the 3.0s, then the full air suspension came on the 2004+ models (some optional). The air suspension can be reprogrammed by the dealer (however a lot will not do it due to the "potential" harm to suspension components). On the full air suspension x5s there is something called an intrax module that intercepts the signal from the suspension and lowers it even more. But to lower the suspension on your x5 you would have to get new front springs and someone to reprogram the rears.
