The mysterious hooting transmission?
Hi everyone,
I have a 4.8is with about 45k miles on it. Whenever the transmission shifts when I'm moderately accelerating (usually 2 to 3, 3 to 4) it makes a strange "hooting" sound. It's not a clunk, it sounds more like a hoot. Anyone every had this issue? Yes, I'm going crazy :) |
That's not right. You better get it checked sooner than later with your warranty being almost up.

Scott were you on the audiworld forums? Anyway I have the hoot your talking about in my 4.6is. Between shifts if your on the gas pretty good. I thought I read somewhere that it's a tube venting the transmission and it can be re-routed per a TSB. I kinda like it, but then again I just read another post where another 4.6is had this same hoot and ended up having to replace the tranny. Anyone else with this noise?

Yep, same guy! My Audi was fixed in a TSB, but the X5 does it now...how weird is that??? |
Scott,
I had a similar issue with my transmission just last week. It turns out the tranny was about 1 quart low on fluid which was causing air bubbles to be sucked into the transmission pump when it shifted gears. Topped off the fluid and the transmission is now (nicely) quiet between shifts again. |
I have the exact same thing on my 4.8is.
