Does anyone know if there is a fuel pump in the fuel tank?

it's under the rear seater and I remember there are two pumps. I forgot why there are two when last time I called the dealer for parts.

I just want to immensely thank you for your tip on replacing the ignition switch. After months of dealing with the "wont' start" issue, I ordered and replaced the ignition switch and on the first go the X5 started....

.....a few months of frustations...a few days of waiting for the part..and two hours later, the x5 is back to normal :thumbup:

But my starter cranks just wont start the x5 though. was yours the same?

Yes. It will crank untill you return the key to position one or the starter "times out" @ about 20-30 seconds.

The starting system on the vehicle is much more complicated than it needs to be. There are several signals going out of and into the ignition switch all which go through relays after that. Too much monkey motion if you ask me. The weakest contacts in the system are in the ignition switch itself. You can either clean them (with spray cleaner) or replace the switch.

To prove the point to myself, have not yet replaced my switch. I cleaned it almost a year ago and the problem went away. It did come back about four months ago. I cleaned it again and the problem has not come back. That makes me confident enough that the switch is THE problem. If it happens again, I'll give in and replace it.

I had the exact same problem with my 3.0D.
Having spent almost a week at the dealers the problem resolution was as follows.

The fuel rail pressure sensor had become faulty and was telling the engine management system that there was insufficient fuel presure therefore it wouldn't start....but as with things that are faulty, it sometimes did start and run ok :confused:
So, there were no fault codes present as the management system was still receiving signals from the sensor - but they were wrong!
After a lot of time and money, the fuel rail pressure sensor was replaced (a cheap part) and all has been running well for over a year.

Thanks heaps Laurence sounds like same prob so i'd say it should be the same solution. Will get sensor changed asap, unfortunately everybody is on holidays now. I'd also like to thank everybody else who helped out :thumbup:
