Installed M5 mirror and now remote keys are screwed

I know it sounds wierd, but thats just what happened.

The M5 mirror swap was a 5 minute job. Just unclip the shroud. Turn the old mirror 45 degrees. Disconnect the plug... and reverse to fit the new mirror.

All seemed to be fine, but I noticed that it took a few clicks to get the car to lock (to check the red LED). But at least the red nose worked.

Then it took about 20 clicks to unlock the car.

Same with both keys, which were working fine and were coded to memory 1 and 2 seat positions. Eventually they work but I guess they are trying a million codes before finding the right frequency.

Is there more to the mirror than just a mirror and red nose ?

I'll stick the old mirror back on tomorrow to check it goes back to normal. Might try disconnecting the battery for 10 mins first.

Help anyone?

TIA. Kev

i doubt your mirror has to do with anything, but can you post a pic of the m5 mirrors on your x5..

The "red nose" is also, I believe, where the remote receiver is, so I would double check the connections, and maybe clean the contacts on your new mirror. Try installing the old mirror and see if all goes back to "normal"...

Thanks for that. I was sure there was more to the mirror than just a rear-view  There's 9 wires going to it !

Unfortunatly I still cant get the online WDS to work with Vista/IE7 (even after installing the viewer.

I'll have another look in the morning.

Cheers.

Well there it is. The new mirror is definately to blame, so anyone thinking of doing this mod should think twice.

I disconnected the battery, no good.
Reset the keys, no good.
Still need to press the lock/unlock buttons about 20 times to get them to register.
Put back the original mirror - all working fine.

If you look at the M5 mirror plug theres 9 pins connected instead of just 8 on the X5. Also they are different colours completely.

Yet somehow, I think I could have a duff mirror, as the problem is only intermittent.

I'll have to see what the seller is willing to do...

Cheers. Kev.

of what? an M5 mirror? ok... here's what the mirror looks like

There you are. Just a bit different, individual, know what I mean, smaller. An X5 driver checking out your car in their rear mirror would notice it straight away...

Personal taste I suppose, but I like 'em better than the square ones.

Old mirror back on now though...

So no issues when you put the old mirror back in?

I have the E39 ///M5 rearview mirrors on the E53 X5 as well and found no issues.

No, once I put the old mirror back on, the key works first push of the button. Then I put the M5 one back on and it takes 10-20 pushed to get the car to lock or unlock.

The guy I bought it from also had it on his X5 and had no probs apparantly. Could there be different alarm systems on the X5 (though both of these are UK spec).

Wonder if there's something serviceable in the mirror? Though, it looks as though it's not supposed to come apart.
