POP-up lcd
Hey guys, i have been pondering a pop up lcd, i was wonder if anyone has tried this before, i was thinking of putting it behind the main vents in the center console. I think i would have to do a bit of carving, but i was wondering if there was enough space back there for it. the LCD, i was looking at was the Xenarc 7" which is about an inch thick. let me know what you guys think.

I think it would be cool, but I personnaly wouldn't want to sacrifice the vents for it. Also, don't know for sure, but I doubt the room is there without extensive cutting - perhaps even the vent tubes that lead to the vents... If you decide to go for it though, please be sure to share your experience with it (including pics!) GL...

I always pondered wether on my non NAV I could get rid of the Business CD but have been told the unit isnt deep enough to do so. There is a guy that sells a bezel for the whole face for mobile auto computing.
I have looked into this site to research this idea at: http://www.avcomwireless.com/mis60.html This guy sells/builds the bezel for exisitng radio slot for the Zenarc unit. http://www.mybimmer.net/X5carpclcd.htm Hope this helps. I am not a ground breaking Mod guy but have explored this idea of MIS in car computing as a less expensive option to retro of a BMW Nav system as a wishlist MOD for the future of my ride. Please let me know or PM me anytime if anyone wants to discuss this idea further. Hope some of this helps or answers your question in your post you were looking for. |
There is quite a bit of room behind the air vents, from what I recall. I'd suggest poping them out and taking a look for yourself to see what would be involved. To remove the vent there are two clips built into the bottom of the vent opening pressing down towards the top of the nav/radio unit. These are located 4 slots from the left and right, respectively. Insert a very small, flat bladed screwdriver into the center bottom slot of the vent. You will see the clip or retainer in the lower surface the vent. Insert the screwdriver into the edge of the clip and lift slightly. Now gently pull w/ wiggle the vent outward. Repeat on the other clip until the vent is free.
To put it back, just slide it back until the tabs lock into place. |
Here is wehat im thinking, sorry my keyboard is a bit messed up. there is this system from bbuy, thtat gives you two lcds, one mounted to a dvd, the other not.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....chk=true&h=387 so im thinking, mounting the one with the dvd player in the back, wiring the standn alone one in the front. then i would run the vid out from a laptop to the two lcds, and use a radio frequency XP media center remote. that way, both would work weelel. i just wish i could figuree out how to hide the front lcd, ie in the way of a pop up. so that it would less likely to be stolen. im thinking if i do the lcd pop up, givin room, im going to buy a panel, such that covers the business cd, so it looks more professional. ill keep you guys posted as i progress. oh yea, i figure i will run the wires for the front lcd behind the vents and under the carpet for video and try to directly tap innto the ac adapter that is right under neath it. any tips on tapping into that adapter would be helpful too. thanks -Vit |
