Help! Service Engine Soon Light!

It came on my 2001 3.0 X5, the idle had been a little on the high side (about 850rpm), then today the light comes on.
OBD II scanner tells me it is a code 41 meaning Intake Camshaft Sensor.

Is this some general problem, or can it be pinpointed to a particular part? Any help is always appreciated, thanks.

Most SES issues are not major, but you need to determine the fault code to know for sure. You can pull them yourself if you have an OBD-II scanner, you can have the dealer do it, or you can have it done by an independent mechanic.

The most common cause of the SES is a loose gas cap.

intake cam sensor is a bit of a pain to change but not that big of a deal. a 7 or 8 mm hex and about an hour should do it.

Just picked my 2001, 4.4 X5 up from dealer service today. Took it in because the SES light came on. Here is what they replaced, MAF Sensor (13-62-1-433-567) / Speed Sensor (12-14-7-539-166)/ O-Ring (12-14-1-748-398)/ Two Hoses (#11-15-7-556-838 & 11-15-7-556-837). Seems to run good now, and Service Engine Light is gone....

Specific part. A few months ago, the light came on ours too. Ours was exhaust cam position sensor. I think parts and labor was $350. WarrantyDirect covered it. Ran smoother afetr it was changed.

SES light came on and I had code 1159 and 1161

I have a 00 4.4 with 58K miles and took it to a local BMW repair shop they charged me $80.00 for 2 hoses and $160 for 2 hours to replace the hoses that go to the PVC type unit on the engine block.. I sure wished I pulled the cover off the engine to see for myself before I took to the repair shop...  .. I told them just to leave it and I would do the work myself but they where going to charge me an $85 testing fee!!! :wow: So I bit the bullet and paid the big bucks.. The hoses where falling apart from the oil and heat.. I've never seen a 4 year old hose fall apart in my hands before... I love my X5

engine light now off

Last night I turned the gas cap till it no longer clicked. This morning the service engine light is now off. Go figure. I do think it was the gas cap, but some sensor. Is running fine now. Time will tell.

When I picked up my '01, the previous owner mentioned to make sure the wire to the fuel cap is not caught under or pinched when resealing the fuel tank. It results in error messages. What kind, I don't know as I am real careful in screwing it back on.

light back on

Oh well, the light came back on and the idle is high like the poster said. Back to the dealer.

I did that once and it triggered the SES light. :banghead:

Sparking up an old thread here! Why start a new one? Anyways... I have the dreaded SES light (for a while on and off, now always on). I have CPO so to the stealer it went. They want $995 to replace 2 hoses (as we know hoses are not covered). I just can't do it... so now its $175 for the diagnostic fee and off to my own mechanic. I bet I still come out ahead of the $995 that the dealer wants for the fix.

Yes, I believe so. Is $995 a reasonable price for that?

If its just the crankcase vent hoses (about $70-80 in parts and hour or two labor), then I'd say that a kilobuck sounds a bit steep.
Was there something else they quoted you in that estimate?

No! Just 2 hoses and a computer reset.

My only SES light was also due to the camshaft sensor in my 2001 - engine ran fine - the sensor itself went bad

Update! Stealer Kicks My Ass Twice!

Ok, so after I told the dealer that I will pick up my x5 and pay the $175 fee for the diagnostics, they roll out the vehicle and it's riding about 1/2 above the fenders! NO air suspension at all. Also, they tell me I can't drive the car home; it must be towed! (note on the paperwork states " vehicle not running, etc etc) ) What? I drove the X in there with only the SES light on! It came back a wreck! (engine failure msg on the MID) Then the tech comes out because I refuse to accept this situation. He tries to raise the suspension - of course nothing happens because he has the door open - I have to tell him the doors must be shut for the system to engage - it doesn't engage anyways. Well, then they give me a loaner and I leave it there again for 3 days. In the mean time, they tell me the coolant container needs replacing due to a crack - under the CPO. Also, they replaced the air springs, module and a switch for the rear suspension (the front was completely replaced under the CPO about 4 months ago). Atleast now I basically have a new air suspension system! I picked up the car today. Everything appeared to be fine... got home and found a steady stream of coolant leaking from the one of the new fittings they installed. Very frustrated - I have had super bad luck with service departments at 2 BMW dealerships - The first (MT VIEW BMW) basically would not honor the CPO regarding the air suspension errors and height issues (one side was 2 inches lower). I brought my X there 4 times and they just reset the error and it just kept happing about every 3 weeks. The last time I picked up the car from Mt View BMW, I drove staright to Stevens Creek BMW and the identified the problem right away - replaced it and sent me on my way. Now I must bring the car back again! oh well....

sorry to hear about that...so Stevens Creek replaced the coolant container and you're bringing it back for the air suspension?

i like using BMWSF and Peter Pan because they try to fix anything i tell them to. (at BMWSF, i always have the same service advisor, and he's really nice...not so much for some of the other ones...)

No... the air suspension was corrected... finall, but when they were doing that fix, they spotted the crack. They replaced the box but now it leaks coolant like crazy.
