Newbie. X5 steering wheel heavy

I own a 2000 BMW X5 4.4. Everything runs good on my car but my steering wheel is VERY heavy compared to the other BMW's that my family owns which includes an e46 e39 and an e38, its still driverable though. I know my power steering works but im not sure that works 100%. i want to make sure that this is normal if not then ill get it repaired. BTW My powersteering fluid is full.

Hows the tread on the front tyres? My steering was getting heavy and a fresh set of tyres made all the difference.

The thread is almost finished. I have a set of hartge classics on the car. The front is 9X19 and the back is 9.5x19. i dont think that made a big difference though.

I had the same feeling as you..I originally trhought it might have been the sport package, which has the larger wheels,/ stiff suspension, until I drove an x5world member's non sport x5 and it was the same.

It's true it's stiff compared to other cars(ie. lexus rx350, mb ml350 ) but once it's moving the steering is so nice and firm. =)

Sounds like you need to work on your upper body strength. :-P

Stiffness is good. Once you go X, you never go back :-)

the bigger wheels will do it. I just took my 19s off for the winter and put the 17s back on and it doesnt have that stiff feel anymore. (doesnt look as hot thou) . The biiger wheels definitely makes a huge dif

I too have noticed a hard steering wheel. Makes my 2007 Audi A4 feel like its been greased! I also hear a funny sound from my wheel. A member on another thread described it as sounding like jeans rubbing together. I have this sound. Is this a symptom of a problem? Any info is appreciated!

I had the same feeling when i first got my X5. Used to driving a Lexus GX470 and that thing floats...

but then again, it doesn't pull like the X5 which is why I drive the X5 and my wife drives the GX
