Replace Inner Front Door Seals?
 

The front rubber inner door seals on my '04 X are peeling off and failing. I want to replace them but don't have any info on how they go on. Can someone help; pictures if you have them. Perhaps the Tis if possible.

thanks x5 dawg: i think they are referring to the seal along the door. The seals I am referring to are the inner seal attached to the body. It doesn't have a break in it but is rather one piece.
I don't know if it needs any glue to attach it to the body. As well i don't know if i have to remove the fabric covered seal that buts up againt the rubber seal in question and how they both are removed.
Any Help.

Actually it is the seal around the door frame (body of vehicle) - or at least that is what I was inquiring about in that post. Mine has a hole in it from shoes being drug across when people are getting in and out.

I see what you are talking about. The other thread does not really describe any of the details yet. I have ordered the inner seals on both of my doors and the parts will arrive in 2 days. I can give you the part numbers after that. If i don't get any info about the correct procedure i will have the local dealer install the rubbers on Jan 26. They want 1 1/2 hrs to install the 2 seals or 1 hr for 1.

I purchased 2 inner seals for driver and Passenger. They have the same part number. I also purchased some sill cover clips ( holds the sill down. )
Part No 51-72-7-025-579 Rubber door Seal Cost 120.00 ea
Part No 51-47-8-263-533 Sill cover clip (5 each /side) Cost 1.73 ea
Part No 51-47-8-254-289 Black Driver sill Cost 9.73
Part No 51-47-8-254-290 Black Passenger sill Cost 9.73

#1 Remove the floor sill: pulli up on the floor sill or pry it up with a screwdriver starting at the hinge end. ( the Other end clips into the vertical plastic sill. The clips are very tight in the holes in the frame and it is likely that you will break out the attachments on the sill . I did. I think you should order the sill and order a couple of the clips only sincethe clips can be removed easier once the sill is removed.

#2 Remove the seal: The seal is just pushed onto a centre metal seam on the body. It pushes straight up the middle of the seal. This takes some work to get it started but once it is started it is very easy to pull off.

#3 Install the new seal: .Get some soap and water in a sprayer bottle and use this to get the new seal and seam wet.( lots of water won't hurt) I started on the hinge side and worked my way up to the top of the door frame. Then near the lower hinge across the bottom of the sill . The last side i installed was on the latch side. Make sure the seal is pushed all the way onto the seam. I needed a hammer and block of wood to get it all the way on. (You can tell it is on all the way when you it it with a hammer in the middle there is very little rebound). Put the seal all the way on as you go around because if you don't you will have extra seal that buckles and seems like the seal is to long. It isn't.

#4 Keep working the seal on until it fits properly and is snug up against the bulkead on the door frame.

#5 Finshishing the Seal :Pull the little string of rubber that is attached to the inside of the rubber seal. This is located where the seal ends are attached together. This is supposed to pull the inner lip of the seal out to cover over the inner lining around the door. ( I just got my finger wet with water and pulled the rubber out all the way around with my finger. )

#6 Reinstall the new sill: by sliding the clips onto the sill first .Align them with the holes in the frame by trial fitting the sill. Slide the latchside of the sill under the vertical plastic piece and then push the clips into the frame.
They are very tight so you may need a hammer and block of wood to acomplish this .( I hit the sill with the palm of my hand and banged them in. Rember there are 5 of them to install.
your done except for cleaning up the soap and water.

I took some pictures while I was doing this but I'm not quite tech savey enough to attach them to this write up.

Thank for the great write-up fepat55. :thumbup: I just replaced the driver's side seal and the only thing I didn't do was use soap and water (too lazy). I also just ended up using the rubber handle end of the hammer to seat the seal. Worked like a charm! Also thanks to Davis BMW in OH for the part! Waaay cheaper than the Canadian stealerships...

my rubber door seals got all torn up from cold weather, the seals that are attached to the body, not the door itself. Is that covered by warranty??? i have a 2003 with 70k

fepat55 - great write-up!! I missed this when you originally posted it, but I wiil def. be using it to replace my driver's side seal.

I had mine replaced on all 4 doors. I have 2004 with 53K and it was covered under warranty.

fs wheel : this isn't the writeup that is referred to in this string. This one refers to the complete seal that attaches to the body frame that goes completely around the door frame.

fepat55 - great write-up! I am replacing both worn seals on my '04 X3 this weekend. Question: should I pull out the thin rubber cords inside the seals AFTER installing them? What is the purpose of these cords? Does the DIRECTION of pulling them out (clockwise or anti-closckwise, from the inside of the door opening or the outside) matter? Thanks!

The thin rubber cord pulls the inner lip of the rubber out . So to answer your question . Yes you need to pull the cord out after you have installed the rubber. It does not matter which direction you pull it. Another suggestion;Put the joint in a place that will not be affected by your feet rubbing on it or your body rubbing on it.

I think that after you install, you pull out the chord to get the lip of the door seal to seal properly. I don't think it matters if you pull it out clockwise or counter. Doing this on mine this weekend.
