at what mileage to change waterpump???
Do the X5s have the h20 pump with metal impellor or the dreaded plastic one??? I have 60k miles and i'm thinking that the time is drawing near. Ur thoughts? I usually change the pump, tstat/housing, pullys, belts around 60k on my older bmws and the radiator and coolant tank around 100k.

Not the worst idea in the world. If you have the time and inclination, changing it at 60K is probably good preventative maintenance.

Changed mine preemptively last Spring at 100k - still looked fine(FWTW). Should have done the thermostat at the same time - the temp gauge is reading lower than usual now that cold weather is here.
Mine did have the plastic impeller. Replaced it with a "Graf" with metal impeller from Autohausaz.com - 'bout $60. Prob'ly do the radiator this summer at around 125K. |
Changed at 37K due to failure. T'stat and t'stat housing also changed as they also leaked!!
|
it failed at 37k??? that just sux....defective part....100k sounds more like it.....I'm gonna split the differfence and change it around 75k.

While you're at it, change the coolant and serpentine belt. Check the hoses and thermostat too.

I asked the same question to my two bmw mechs, the told me that if it's not leaking to leave it alone. My truck has 84k miles.
If it aint broken, don't fix it. |

I've never had a w/pump fail because i always replace them b4 they fail. This is my 4th bmw. I have heard too many stories where the pump fails and the car/truck over heats and warps the head or the fan blades go thru the radiator causing 2 very expensive repairs...so u can pay a lil now or a lot later...think about it because that w/pump will fail sooner or later.
