02 4.4i X5 hit 120,000 miles today; should I dump $2,200 into it?
I am worried about my tranny at this point; it's showing NO signs of problems but I read so many horror stories here. I am just not ready to buy a new car at this point; I have not even begun to research for a new car. I took it in to the shop to have my coolant reservoir replaced, my power steering pump replaced (no pressure) my hoses and belts/pulleys replaced and it's totaling up to $2150. I am not worried about the cost but at this point worried that 120k is end of life for BMW X5's.
Can anyone here offer any signs of encouragement? I'd like to keep this car for 2 more years if I can. Or would you run away from this thing and trade it in ASAP? |
Your kidding right? Anyone who drives a BMW has to know the deal. If your not worried about the cost one could keep it on life support indefinitely. Your choice.........

I think it depends how many miles would you accumulate in two more years.
A new tranny is what, 4k-6k? How much are you looking to spend on a new car? |
BMW Repairs = Expensive
It doesn't get better as they get older. |
If you own it with no payments it is probably still cheaper, but more frustrating, to keep it for two more years than trade it in for a new X5.
Figure mid 8's/month for a new lease + down payment or MSD + tax etc. etc. You gotta pay to play either way...unfortunately |
I am not as worried about the repairs but just wonder what typical lifetime of this thing is. I have replaced so much on it so there isn't much more that can go wrong. :)
I like the car but those new G37's are calling my name! I can handle 2100 but it would suck to dump another 7k in for a dead tranny. I hear 120k is about the time a tranny dies on an X5. I was hoping the tranny would last 200k, is that wishful thinking? |
Of course it's worth it. If you have a car that you like and has been reliable then why not. Besides, think of all of the fun you can have by not going into debt to replace a perfectly good car. Enjoy
