diy for fuel sensor replacement
 

hey guys, so it looks like my fuel sensors are done, been acting funny once awhile, and now its just messed up. I'll be empty and it'll show still half tank, i fill up and shows only a 1/4 tank. After driving few days it might go up to full tank, then next day drop to 1/2 tank.

Anyways im thinking of replacing the units myself, has anyone tried replacing the fuel sensor units? i know theres 2, 1 on each side under the back seat. Do i need to empty out the tank first? is it pretty much take the screws out from the top and replace unit?

test the sensor before you pull them out. make sure they're given the correct output (impedence?)

if you can access the sensors like you do with the fuel pump then it shouldn't be difficult.

Let us know if you do this - mine also stops just below 1/4 tank. Wife and I have run out of gas about 4 times this year and I would love to get this thing replaced.

i think i found a cheap fix. On my previous e36, i used to run redline s1 complete fuel system cleaner atleast once a month, and also seafoam maybe twice a year. Well i tried a bottle of redline s1 2 nights ago, and suddenly my fuel gauge meter started working perfectly. I wont know for awhile if this fixed my issue or not, but after this tank, i'm gonna run another bottle of redline. I should know in couple weeks if this has helped my problem or not.

you probably have sulfur in your fuel. shell was sue a few years ago in the bay area for having too much sulfur. it causes deposits on the fuel level reader (slide?).

redline is a great fuel system cleaner. use it a few more times and change change the fuel filter.
