How to Reset Service Interval Lights
For X5's produced from October/November 2000 and beyond:

1. Key in 0 or off position.

2. Press and hold odometer button and turn key to 1 or acc. position.

3. Keep button pressed until any of the following words appear in display: "oil service" or "inspection", with "reset" or "re". For vehicles with "high cluster", the fuel amount (in litres) remaining until next service is displayed (i.e. 3224).

4. Press and hold button again until "reset" or "re" flash. If there is no "flash", minimum consumption value has not been met.

5. While display is flashing, press button briefly to reset service interval indicator. After display has shown new interval, the following will appear in display for approx. 2 seconds:"END SIA"

any ideas?

Do you get the flash in step 4? If not then you may not have met the minimum consumption values

sarunas4 07-27-2008 05:57 PM

figured it out! thanks! ... after reviewing step 4.. i realized that after "reset" starts flashing i need to press and let go... while i was holding before!.. now i got the INSPECTION 15525 message.. i guess thats what it should be..?
thanks

UCrewX5 07-27-2008 06:06 PM

It won't. You need to do a hard reset.

Whoopitupinmo 08-28-2008 07:38 AM

what is a hard reset??

supersteve 08-28-2008 05:42 PM

Using a reset tool such as a PEAKE.

Whoopitupinmo 08-29-2008 08:43 AM

OH - I see that done at dealership? or with the tool and the circle thing with pins?

Reset Service Indicator Lamps

Just a very quick note to thank you guys, the reset procedure worked fine for me, although I had to make a number of attempts. I seldom get time to contribute to the forum but I often look in on any new posts. I’m in this for the long haul so I’m sure the time will come when I can assist others as you guys have done for me

Hi there

What is the minimum consumption values? I thought it was 2.5 gallons but in my case, I have already used up 1/2 tank of gas and the reset procedure does not seem to work on my 2003 X5 3.0

Help please

Thanks

Hi there, have not been successful in resetting the service indicator

After holding the reset button for 5 seconds while the the key is in position 1, I get Oil Service show up but the RESET does not appear.

Have tried this countless times and no luck

Any suggestions?

Bump ...

Hi there ...

I have tried the listed instructions countless times but am not successful in reseting the service indicator on my 03 X5 3.0

Each time, after holding the button more than 5 seconds, all I have is below the green indicators and the word Oil Service. I don't have the RESET light display

Once before, at the stealer, the service advisor had placed the key in the ignition and he pressed the button and turned the ignition slowly. After numerous times, he was able to get the RESET to light up and flashed. His approach was different from what is written here. I tried what he did and was not successful too.

Any suggestions?

worked perfect

Zerochief thanks for posting.

Gearhead, if you are still having trouble give a go two or three times. You may think you followed the instructions exactly (as I did) but may actually catch it the third go around. Also, I notice that your key position starting out may be different... ensure that the key starts off at position 0 then move it to positon 1. maybe that will help?

Minimum consumption values pertain to the vehicle utilization (number of miles driven, gallons of gas consumed, etc.) since the last service was performed. This has nothing to do with how full your gas tank presently is.

Qsilver7 11-01-2012 07:13 AM

Ditto...minimum consumption values are dependent on which model BMW you have (different engines & fuel tank sizes etc). See the info below about SIA III and the instructions on how to reset the Service Interval using the buttons on the instrument cluster (that were previously given back on page 1 of this thread)

Those experiencing SI reset failure...more than likely are NOT following the instructions correctly. Re-read the instructions and make sure you understand what ignition position 1 is...and that you are pressing, releasing, and pressing the buttons again as given in the instructions:

Did you ever figure this out? From what you wrote...it appears that you may be getting hung up after STEP 1. We can only go by what you wrote, and you never gave a very descriptive step by step procedure that you were doing. Not having a clear virtual image of what you may or may not be doing makes it difficult to say why you're not achieving success.

You can reread the instruction posted above from the BMW TIS...or take a look at my re-write of the instructions below. Also note that the BRAKE FLUID RENEWAL procedure doesn't apply to those of us in the USA. BMW NA has this warning turned off...and we are just recommended to schedule to have our brake fluid changed every two years.

For example, to accomplish an instrument cluster reset requires 3 presses of the odometer reset button during the various prompts you see in the Check Control Display in the instrument cluster
  1. PRESS & HOLD odometer button, then turn ignition from OFF to Position 1, continue to hold the button until you see something like OIL SERV, INSPECTION, RESET, or RE appear in the display (you can get any of these words depending on which instrument cluster you have). You may NOT get all of these words. Release the button when at least one of the aforementioned words appear.
  2. PRESS & HOLD the odometer again until you see RESET or RE start to FLASH in the display...now release the button again.
  3. PRESS the odometer button for the 3rd time now...while the word RESET or RE is FLASHING in the display...this should now illuminate all 5 green LEDs in the SI display.
