Has anyone experience this?

The glass on the back close down boot just shattered?
This morning I woke up to see the glass shatter....along the base of the glass. Could this break just by mere pressure of closing of the back. I know sometimes I had to close it down with a little force.

Soryy about that. A friend of mine had her whole back glass shattered when her son threw a bunch of keys at her, missed her and hit her X.

Only time I've had the back window broken on any of my SUVs, it's been deliberate (ie, broken into, 2x)

It's not uncommon for a rear glass to shatter at what seems an unconnected time. Typically it has beed damaged by a stone chip or similar hours or days earlier and then stress changes and the glass shatters. It can be as simple as the glass warming up, moving the vehicle off the drive.

It happened a few years back to me on a saloon and the glass fitters advised it happens all the time with structural glass in cars.

Although not structural in the tailgate I can imagine the same scenarion when slamming it

i thought the '04 and later x5 had the soft closure that automatically closes it. you don't need to slam at all

is yours an earlier version? if so, maybe they made this change to address the situation.

:wow: - thankfully virtually all my closing problems vanished when I had the lock replaced on my 2001 due to water leaking into the license plate lights
