X5 4.6is Trunk Rattles
 

The trunk on my X5 rattles like crazy when going over every little bump. It's driving me nuts. I'm almost at a point of taking it to the dealer to have it checked out. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Help please!?

I hope you hear something on this as I am having the same problem with my '03 4.4i. I sometimes get a rattle from the rear even on a corner.

Search the archived posts. There's been plenty of discussion about this. I think one of the solutions is to move the rubber bushings around.

This is a common problem on any vehicle with a two-piece tailgate.

Mine started to rattle after a new, lower tailgate was fitted. I fixed it by adjusting the two lock arms (left and right sides of tailgate opening), that the lower tailgate locks lock onto. Pop off the plastic covers and adjust by loosening two bolts and moving arms toward the front of the car. Adjust them until the lower tailgate shuts firmly against the rubber seal and panel alignment is OK.
At either side of the upper tailgate opening are two adjustable stops. Place a piece of 80gm paper over these adjustable stops and close upper tail gate onto the sheets of paper, trapping the paper. The upper tail gate adjustable stops are correctly adjusted when you can pull the paper from between the adjustable stop and the upper tailgate without ripping the paper but feeling resistance when pulling.

I just fixed this yesterday after doing a search. Simply find some round felt pads for furniture and stick them on the rubber stoppers on the pillars of the upper tailgate. Problem gone :)
