CV Boot
350 for a side (boths boots) is what I got from my indy. Probably didn't need the inners changed, but did it anyway.
FYI. I heard the dealer replaces the whole shaft(which includes the boots on them). Thats another reason why its so high. |
No that was $350 total for both sides....
I spoke with the tech and he said that he will remove the shafts clean and reseal and only recommend a replacement if a tooth was missing or stress cracks.

Cv Boots
I recently was successful in replacing the driver's side outer cv boot in my 3.0. There are several specialty tools required to perform the job and even once you do rent or buy the tools the procedure is time consuming and extremely messy. IMO, it is definitely worth $250 - $300 per side if both boots are done by an independent shop. This is the price I was quoted when I was half way through the job and ready to give up. There is a high probability of damaging the shafts if the job is not done correctly and then it will set you back approx. $600 - $700 for a refurbished replacement shaft. This was quite a task even for me. Some background on the DIY's I've done: Water pump, thermostat, belt tensioners, control arms, final stage resistor, and brake rotors and pads on the X; Engine, tranny, diffs, xsfer case and everything in between on a 78 F250. If anyone still insists on a DIY, I would be glad to help with any specific questions.

FWIW, non-stlr (euro spec repair shop) replaced my 1 side outer cv boot for 244.

Is it obvious when a cv boot is going bad?

Grab a light and crawl under the X and touch the boot...
look close for any signs of dry root....if it is supple and plyable you should be ok...if it shows any type of cracking when you push your finger in, it will be in your near future.
