Help newbie about to buy used 2002 x5!!!!!

By the way love the X5wold website. Blows away many other car boards I have seen. Well here it is: 2002 BMW x5 3.0 sport…. 73k miles… clean title .. looks perfect paying $19,270.00…. wondering if this is a good price.. it appears to be so…… also what do you think of a extended warranty for $3500.00 (48,000 miles or 4 years). Is that something I should definitely do???????

Thank you so much ya all,

Scott

:wavey::xoutpost::wavey:

in other threads concerning prices, this does seem high for this car.

maybe that price including the extended warranty

is it a 5 speed manual or an automatic?

i have an '02 5 speed manual and it sucks. 5th gear is way too short and the dual-mass flywheel combined with a very short first gear makes it effectively impossible to start the car smoothly.
i simply cannot believe that BMW produced something this lousy.

you have to wait and shop around. For that price, you can get a 4.4i same year, just a higher clock. Not that much of a difference in gasoline consumption and you will feel a difference.

try to negotiate it down. dont get the 4.4i as others say, preface lift 4.4i has worse engines than the 3.0. if you want v8 engine, buy the facelift 04+. $17,500 to $18,000 is the right range for the 2002 3.0i. before you buy, check these items: cv boots (torn boots), water pump (leaking), thermostat (temp needle pegged to the right after 5 mins), dead pixels on cluster or mid, battery, alternator(measure the voltage), listen to the transmission for bad sounds(make sure there is no sound from transmission, reverse and foward shift smooth), windows regulators(check them all by rolling up and down), heavy steering wheel (sounds like rubbing jeans together), brakes, knocking sounds in engine bay, open oil cap and the dipstick to check if there is a milky liquid there (signs of oil seperators failing), check coolant to see if oil mixed in there too, check for leaks on coolant resevoir, washer fluid tank too. lock and unlock all door using remote to check doors actuators, lock and unlock using central switch inside to check the central locking system. check for oil leaks too.
those are very common problems on the 3.0i that you should pay attention to before purchase. and good luck deciding, dont get the 4.4i this old.

Hi,

Hmmm, I got a 02 X5 3.0i last year November for $27,000usd. Milage 43K, is this over-priced?

I m enjoying the ride and have not had to do any repairs on her till today. I ve covered about 3000miles now and its been a jolly ride.

I think the advise given in the last reply is worth-it, u dont want to start spending money on repairs immediately .... so do those checks!

I wish u the best of luck!!!!

With that brief description, it might be a tad high priced...
as for that "warranty", no idea if it's a good deal, as it
could be a legit operation or some less well funded "warranty".

UncleBob, above, dislikes his 3.0...I like ours and it too, is one
of the rare 5 speeds. You didn't mention the trans in the 3.0
you are considering, but a 3.0 has considerable ooommph in
most situs, imo, auto or manual.

For a "should I buy it post", you really need to supply more info;
if it's some used car dlr on the corner, I'd pass in a fookin heartbeat:
BMW stlrs have lots full of these things, and many come with a CPO
warranty and the selection should be excellent.

Welcome to the Board.

Sounds expensive. Don't fall in love with the first one you see. Wait for the options and colors you want, like NAV, heated seats, sport package, etc. At least drive a 4.4 for a comparison. The V8 sound and thrust was worth the 1 - 2 mpg difference to me. Also the 4.4 is a strong, reliable engine. Good Luck
