Engine Surge is Driving Me Crazy
I have an '05 4.4i that has an engine surge. It only seems to happen after the vehicle is warm and only noticable when I come to a stop at a stoplight. I have already taken it in once to the dealership and they are telling me this is normal. It doesn't always do it. Sometimes when I come to a stop it doesn't even feel or sound like it is running. This surging is driving me CRAZY!!! It is a really heavy surge.
Is this normal or has someone else had this problem and know the fix? Thanks, Tracy |
I had this probelm on my 3 series and replacing the ignition coils was the fix. My X5 has not had the problem, but the dealer said that there was an outstanding recall for coil replacement when he ran the VIN, so I'll have that done before it starts surging too.

Thanks for that info. I will contact the dealership and see what they have to say.

The term for this problem is called "hunting." This usually happens when a sensor is out of parameters, or being driven out of parameters by another fault. An obd2 diagnostics tool would probabily really help. In a case like this, unless you know a common flaw or faulty part, you just can't replace things blindly. If you replaced all the sensors and electronic control components, you could replace your vehicle for cheaper :-) OBD2 scan tools are cheap and are a necessity if you want to service your own vehicle. Your service engine soon light "doesn't have to come on" for your computer to store (soft codes) If there has been a problem with your electrical system in the past, these codes will also be shown at the time of reading. (unless they have been cleared) Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK!

Mine seems to be doing the same thing but I don't see the tachometer needle moving as it surges. I hear it but I don't feel it try to pull out from under my brake. Do you actually feel it try to surge away from you or do you see your tach needle move?
I have a 2005 4.4i as well. Quote:

Engine Surge
I had the same problem with my 4.4i at 100,000km and it turned out to be the MAF sensor. I also had the fuel pump replaced (it had lost some pressure) and together it fixed the problem.

I am still trying to get this figured out and am finding that the service in Spokane is very lacking. I actually ended up taking my vehicle over to Seattle for an issue that I was reporting to my local service people and they found it right away and now my vehicle is fixed. It just kind of sucks that I have to drive 600 miles round trip to get good service but so far it has been worth it.
I also don't see the tachometer needle move when it surges. Quote:

so what did they do to it?
