New member here, currently an e39 Dinan 540 owner. Soon to be x5 owner. I was given a referral from the guys over at bimmerforums to ge on here with all my questions that no one seemed to know. So here I am, as soon as my e39 is gone I will be purchasing an x5. Most likely a 4.6is, but I'm still debating the option to just go with a 4.4. Anyhow, I just thought I would drop in and introduce myself first. Any advice on what to look for or opinions on whether I should go with either the 4.6 or 4.4 are defenitely welcome. Thanks guys!

Coming from a Dinan 540 you will want the 4.6is! The milage is certainly worse than the 4.4i but the power is fantastic!
Find one with up to date maintenance. I have replaced the transmission, Mass Air Flor sensor and various front suspension bits to the tune of about $6,000. Get an aftermarket warranty!! Take your time and try and find one with some of the upgrades you may want. Spend some time reading and searching the forum to learn about the various issues and modifications for the X5. |
2004 or newer
And under CPO. |

Yea, I am leaning towards the 4.6is. Most likely it will be a 02 or 03. Since they are more in my budget. I wish i could get a newer one, but I have to limit myself unfortunately.
Besides the body kit and motor, what is the real dfference between the 4.6 and 4.4. Does it offer a better supsension? I noticed the interior is different, and most come with NAV. Someone mentioned to me that the 4.6 is basically BMW's M version of the X5. But i figured that if that were true than there would be a major difference than just the kit and interior, and .2 liters... |
