I cant believe the number of expansion tank failures, my 2001 4.4L tank gave up the ghost at approx 100K. Attempted to repair it with Araldite to no avail had to replace it.

The balance hose and attachments are a nightmare, Ive replaced mine with silicon fuel line and Jubilee clips, drama dealing with the original components solved.

I replaced my cooling fluid with BP Coolant mixed to the correct ratio for the lowest minimum temperature the vehicle is expected to experience. I know you guys in the US get bloody cold so apply some caution.

10. remove the tank. you will remove the tank together with the ATF heat exchanger connector (blue arrow)


the new tank comes without the ATF connector, coolant level sensor (number 5 in fig 1) and locking clip (number 4 in fig 1). you will use the ones that you have. be careful with the coolant level sensor. turn it clockwise slowly.


to mount the whole system back you will have to start with ATF heat exchanger connector. it goes on some kind of rail. then the heat exchanger and the tank. make sure you lock back all locking clips.
the heat exchanger has 2 x-rings. you might want to replace those. OEM-17101439140 at pelicanparts.com


Coolant filling:
1. turn ON the ignition (the engine should be OFF)
2. set the temp to 80 degrees
3. set blower to low
4. radiator bleed screw is loose (I have a bleeding screw on top of the radiator hose)
5. add coolant slowly
6. watch the bleed screw! when it starts to overflow stop adding coolant.
start the engine and let it run for 5-6 minutes. check the level coolant after the engine cools off. I used around a gal of coolant

enjoy! I bet you'll find other things to fix once you remove the splash shield cover. a leak here, a leak there, a cv boot.....

I have joined the club - my tank cracked yesterday.. I disconnected the 2 top hose and the bottom hose and there was the vertical crack at the seam.
Gotta go get a new one tomorrow.

I wonder if its worth it to custom fab an aluminum expansion tank for the 4.4. looks like mine was replaced 2x since new (~ 5years each). and genuine BMW on both counts

Had an indie mechanic installed the tank for $120. Instruction on this board was straightforward enough for DYI, but I didn't want the hassle. Tank works like charm. No more low fluid lights :-)
