E53 over filled oil
Hi had my 2003 4.6 serviced in early december and since then the power delivery at higher revs feels like it's fuel starved ,did a bit of digging around and think it may be something to do with the vanos system . I may be wrong but is the vanos reliant on oil pressure for its function ? Also would overfilling the oil (well above the top of the plastic indicator) have any serious problems for the engine. I am thinking that this may all be related to the over filling but would like to know before i go to the dealersfor armed if they have cocked up the engine from over filling the oil. Any help greatly appreciated .

Yes, over filling the oil can cause damage..... depending on how much!!! Up to one quart probably won't do that much damage. Anything over that could get into your valves and cause issues.

tahks for the info not sure how much extra is in but its over the top of the dip stick indicator! will take it to the dealer ship and have a moan see if they can find what else is wrong . thanks again

Overfilling the oil sump should not affect anything to do with the valves. I don't see the connection to the VANOS system.
If the oil level is too high, the crankshaft will effectively whip it up like a giant blender. If you check the dipstick in that situation it will show frothy oil. Frothy oil doesn't lube bearings, as it is full of air. If it doesn't appear frothy, the high level is likely not hurting the engine. That isn't to say that it is OK to overfill; I would have them drain it back down to the fill point to eliminate the risk of damage. If the vehicle feels different after a service, I would enquire as to whether the adaptive throttle or transmission controls could have been reset. If so, they will relearn your driving behavior. |
VANOS is oil pressure driven, so if the oil pressure is way off of what it should be, it would screw with the timing. That would definitely cause sluggish response.

will get them to drain the excess oil off maybe its overpressure causing the problems not sure how the oil pressure is regulated or if it is at all. thanks all for the help

It is regulated. Overfilling doesn't cause overpressure. If it has been whipped up and is frothy, it could have low pressure, but then you would have other more serious problems.

The oil temperature sensor circuit appears to be open. That would indicate a disconnected harness, or a cut/broken wire in the harness. I don't know the location of the sensor, but would look around where you were working and see if you can find something disconnected. If you go to realoem.com and look up the parts it will show you the location of the sensor (there could be more than one). Good luck. |
