4.8is and the Drag Strip
This last Sunday I went to the local drag strip to support a friend who was making a few passes down the 1/4 mile drag strip in efforts to further dial in his hot-rod for the season. When I showed up there were less than 25 cars running that day so I paid the extra $5, had my X5 teched-in and got in the staging lanes. Of course I was there to support my friend so I only made one pass but it was still fun.
I'm not sure what the specs are so I don't know if I did good or not but... my 2004 4.8IS turned out a 14.82 @ 93.37MPH in the 1/4, 9.57 @ 73.85MPH in the 1/8, and the 60ft was a 2.15. My X5 is stock and I made the pass with the DSC off and in the Sport Manual Mode. Now I know that most probably haven't ran their X5 at the 1/4 drag strip but if you are nuts like me and have, I'd be curious to compare times. Especially those with performance mods. Yeah I'll admit, that single pass has me thinking about perormance mods. |
YOu are slower than motor trend times. They took the quarter in 14.5
|
What is your 0-60? Stock is 7 seconds and quarter-mile pass is about 15.3 seconds (dunno what speed) but yours made it at 14.82? I think it performed the wayt it suppose to.

nice man. im thiinking of taking mine to a strip in the summer. my friends have a trailblzer ss and cherokee srt-8. just want to race them see what happens. haha
|
I'm actually going at the end of the month so I'll post my times
|
by the way did you launch yours or was it just light green and then floor it? Also did you take out anything like the spare tire or run the car with low gas?

You will loose, by quite a bit. |
My time slip doesn't show a 0-60 time.
I didn't do any kind of launching as in holding the brakes and throttle at the same time. It was just a floor it to go type of situation. I didn't remove anything from the vehicle for this run except the girl. In fact I would have let her ride with me if it was allowed. I didn't want to leave her out in the cold. I believe I had about a half tank of gas. I wonder how much weight is saved and if it would make a difference running with less fuel?! I know the GC SRT8 would beat me in a straight line but I'm not sure about the Trailblazer SS. I'm willing to bet the X5 can out handle them though. |
Wow! I found an article from MotorTrend that claims a 14.3 @ 95.8MPH http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...iew_specs.html! Car and Driver has the 4.8is at 14.5 @ 96MPH http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...st+page-2.html. Any chance they overrate or am I just that slow? Maybe just a tune up and new air filter will make me faster?! Or maybe I need to reset something?

why.....

it all depends on how many times you go to the track and the weather conditions. You can def pull out a better time than your first. the trailblazer ss is about 14.0 in the quarter, I think it has u beat. Bmw is still the best in handling though. the twin turbo x will be a force to reckon with

the magazine companies usually have an adjustment factor for weather conditions, so they may not actually get what they say, furthermore, it would be easy to drop a few tenths by removing weight (like the spare tire and running out the gas tank), making sure the tire pressures are correct, and launching the car. I've always wondered whether the 4.8is was faster starting in 2nd gear vs. 1st b/c 1st seems so weak and 2nd feels like it's really pulling. Plus the car slips the transmission until 2500 rpm is reached (about 25mph) so it essentially keeps the torque #'s up. Also I'd be willing to bet that a <6500 rpm shift vs. the 7200 done with sport mode and the kick-down button pressed would be faster b/c the X doesn't really make that much power up there. I've tested this theory on on-ramps and when I shift around 6200 vs running it all out it looks as though my exit speed on the same ramp is at least 5 - 10 mph higher.

Doubt you would beat the trailblazer ss in the 1/4. From Car and Driver:
Performance ratings (mfr's est): Zero to 60 mph: 5.4-5.5 sec Standing 1/4-mile: 13.9-14.0 sec Certainly you would out handle it though. |
If you want to go to the track for fun, do it. But don't get your feelings hurt. The SS and the SRT8 are going to stomp the daylights out of you.
My previous vehicle was the GC srt8 and the X is WAY better in every category except out and out brutal acceleration. Have fun and enjoy yourself but keep your money in your pocket. |
hahha. i wont be betting no money racing the ss or the srt-8. i know they could win but just would be cool to see by how much.
