Ipod cable advice need
 

Can someone recommend a place to get a cable to connect an ipod to the Aux audio input? I am specifically looking for a cable that will connect to the BOTTOM connector to an ipod so that it provides line-out output. I know that BMW makes a cable specifically for the 6FL option which is a Y-cable that has a USB and 3.5mm connector on one end and a connects to the bottom of the ipod on the other end. Any idea if BMW makes a cable for just the aux input case? Lastly, I prefer the cable to be black (not white) if that is possible. Thanks for the help.

Is that a BMW item ? If so what is the P/N? and does it come in different lengths or colors?

This is not a BMW item, the cable comes in white only.

Anyone know if BMW sells such a cable?

Why not buy it from the one guy on this board that can, and has, helped you? Dude, it is just a few bucks, and is exactly what you need!

I probably will, but I'm still trying to find one in black and he only has it in white.

:iagree: Why do you want to shell out extra dough for a BMW cable? BMW doesn't make their own cable anyway...they just rebadge it and add a 50% premium. It's just copper wires...nothing special.

It will work with all iPods that have a dock connector, this is not a BMW part.

They are not made in Black and once it's in the glove box (that's where you have yours i presume) no one is going to see it anyway...:thumbup:

I like the round logo. Probably the same reason I shelled out extra dough for a BMW and not a Geo Metro.

Because I can't control song selection through the stereo or steering wheel I need to have the ipod relatively close to me, which means having the cable running from the glovebox to the center armrest or so. A black cable on a black interior is nearly invisible. A white cable is not. It's a huge PITA to keep hiding the cable when running 50 errands on the weekend.

I have a cable to connect an ipod to the Aux audio input. It didn't come from BMW because the BMW cable cost to much and besides they didn't make them in the first place. It came from Apple.

I did go to the Apple store and they told me they never made such a cable, which is why a company called Sendstation created a product to fix this problem. The only problem with their product is that you need it AND a cable and I'd really like just 1 component.

I looked at the Sik product in person, and while it's very nice, it is a huge mess in the car and adds to the complexity of unplugging it from the cigarette lighter socket all the time. Talk about your huge PITA's!

Thanks for the tip, but like I said before, it's not quite the elegant solution I am looking for. If I keep my ipod in a case I can easily connect it to a dock connector cable, but the pocketdock will not mate correctly unless it's completely out of its case. By the way, I actually tried it and for some reason I can't explain, it didn't work! No signal whatsoever?! Weird.

Seriously though, I am amazed that of the 10 million ipod accessories that now exist including a toilet paper dispenser with an integrated ipod dock, one can't buy a simple cable! I have searched for a while for this item and so far have come across exactly 2 companies that sell such a cable, both are in white and only come in 1 length each. Isn't that simply amazing?!

The reason I asked if someone knew if BMW made such a cable is that the cable BMW includes with the 6FL option (combined ipod aux input / USB port) on newer cars is a black cable, and frankly a very well made one! See photo attached (credit goes to someone who posted it on the E70 thread). Now this cable would be "almost" ideal were it not for the fact that it is so short and wayyy too short to run from the glovebox aux port to the center console.

Thanks for the tip. I might just go with that one and remove the retraction thing since I just want a fixed length cable. Cable looks a little thin for my taste especially to use in a car (it's usually preferable to have a better shielded cable anyway) but I suppose I'm running out of options!

Why dont you buy the e70 cable and move your aux to center armrest and the problem is solwed

Thought about it, but decided against it for 2 reasons:

1. I can't lock the center armrest, I can lock the glovebox
2. I would need to do a hell of a lot more work to move the aux input then to simply buy a cable... though this is slowly turning out to be less and less true!

At first this wasn't my ideal choice since I really really wanted a one piece cable, but it turns out this is perfect since I can easily unplug this connector when I want to listen from a difference audio source (like a voice recorder or any other MP3 player, etc.) Thanks Zerochief for the great tip!

As far as what cable to use with one of the above connectors, you can pretty much choose any cable as long as it is Mini-male to Mini-male (also known as 3.5mm male stereo plugs on both ends). Just make sure the cable is thick enough to withstand abuse in the car but not too thick so that you can still easily close your glovebox. My favorite is the Audioquest (AudioQuest) Class A cable in 1 m length. It's the perfect length, thickness and only $20, it's just too bad that one end isn't a right angle connector!
