193,000 Miles & Running Strong
I thought I would post that I roled 193,000 miles and my 2001 3.0i Sport runs better now than it did when it was new. I am still using the original water pump. Basically just uses oil, gas and brake pads.
|
oh wow, water pump was never replaced?
|
Auto tranny lasted that long?
|
Awesome! Knock on wood trim.
|
Wow that's a lot of miles.
Another high mileage 3.0! |
Bodacious!!! I have 68Kmi and mine is falling apart :)
|
Yes! glad to hear that !!
|
Congrats, but I'd be knocking on a huge slab of wood, if I were you!
:goodluck: |
I am still on original tranny, and I can not knock on wood trim because wood does not belong in a car. I have the all black/titanium trim package. I am just going to drive it unitll it breaks. But to be honest for as hard as I drive this truck it has been relativily trouble free. Once I was going to replace the water pump just for preventative but was talked out of it.
|
Have u had the auto transmission fluid changed???
|
Congratulations! I'm at 95K on my 01' and looking forward to another 100K. Do you have long highway commutes?
|
Man, I thought I had a lot with 133K miles on my '01!!!
Keep it going!!! |

welcome to the over 190,000 mile club!!!
my 01 X= 240,000 |

No not yet, although I bought tranny oil last night to change it. I kidda think if it ain't brokin don't fix it. But I am going for it. Most miles are from daily commuting 200-350 miles per day. Hard driving though. I burn about a quart of oil every 2-3000 miles, which I am told can be normal if you are a high spirited driver. |
Thats Great inspiration!! I have 124k.... on my 03 3.0 still rolling strong..... just stay up with maintenance and keep it Clean.. a clean car is a happy car!!
|
I thought I heard that the 3.0i trannies are usually a little better off then the V8 trannies that have to deal with more power.
I hope our 3.0i lasts that long. That's amazing you've had absolutely no issues at all. |
I bet there are a lot more of us out there than we know about, considering the reason for most posts is due to needing info or having issues with the vehicle.
Don't see many posts on here saying, "Hey, just wanted to let you know I rolled 150K miles and still don't have any problems!!" |
the 01 have a little issue compair to 02 transission.
|
my 01 is on 108k and thought that was high! I have the 4.4 and if i can get to 190 I'll be very happy. Not sure how that will be in NYC though..
|
That's great news. I've got 30k so it looks like ill be sticking around awhile :)
|
I just turned 106k yesterday, and execpt for a sensor, everything seems fine. And of course the window motor plastics that broke.
|
Forgot to add, I have only put on 22k in the last 3 years, so the vehicle doesn't get driven much. We have 3 other cars and 3 motorcycles to drive also.
|
Ya, but that's still great.
|
I'm at 166K miles, but unfortuantely, the auto tranny went out about 30K miles ago, but I did change the tranny oil and who knows? Also, right cat converter needed to be replaced, but my O2 sensors were gone, prolly should have replaced the O2 sensor @ 100K miles....now, I'm not burning oil anymore like I did since the bad O2 sensors was making my engine run richer than it should....No cold weather related problems (e.g. oil separator) due to our local climate is quite mild.
Already went through 4 window regulators....but other than that, the X5 has been fine. The X5 runs much better with better fuel mileage since the cat was replaced. |

How many miles now? |
my buddy has one with 215k miles 3.0 too.. never heard of a v8 with more then 165k miles
|

Quote:
yes 540's with more then 165k but on a x5 its different and theres so much more stress on engine..So much more things can break too.. |
I can't wait to get to that mileage with my 3.0. It makes me sleep better at night knowing that 3.0s get that high of a mileage if taken cared of.
|
I am at 228,048 miles. I was having some engine problems for a while, I was getting P1083,P1085,p0171,P0174 codes. I replaced my mass air sensor today and now it runs like a BMW again. So its back to the races!
|
153K and running strong!!!
|
i am hoping my x could last that long.

is it just me ... why are people surprised a BMW can get to high mileage? should be able to with proper routine and preventative maintenance.
my 318ti is still on the original clutch, trans, engine @ 237k miles and i haven't touched any of them other than doing fluid changes. |
I guess with all of the issues you hear on here with the X5, some are skeptical that it will give them long-term service.
With that said, I spent around $12K last year to keep this thing going, but my intentions are to keep it for quite awhile longer. |
Yeah, but I think as someone else pointed out, you're generally on here posting because you have an issue so it's likely slanted towards "there's a lot of issues". If you (or previous owners) don't keep up with routine and preventative maintenance, it'll very likely come back to bite you. I just got mine used last year and have to do all the usual stuff so I know it's been done. I also have to do as much as I possibly can myself because I can't afford taking it to the dealer :) I'm very happy to have found a site like this with very knowledgeable people!
|
We should all keep the mileage in our sigs and update it every month or so :D
I'd have to keep my car for a very long time to see that kind of mileage. My 08' E92 coupe has 5,300 miles on it and I picked it up in April and my fiance puts about 100 miles a week on the X5. |
130k on a 4.4 00' at the moment. had a few problems but still running strong lol
|
Heres the truth -we all just really love our X5 because if we didnt we wouldnt call them good trucks.. Because the truth is they suffer from lots of things and somethings to get repaired are hell.. like a alternator is a $2k job at dealer and $1k for a air bag replacement and install for the rear air suspension-that for a v8)... THIS IS WHY WHEN THESE TRUCKS DONT HAVE WARRANTY THEY LOSE LOTS OF VALUE!!
|
3.0 suffer from less thing.. easy to work on. no air suspension 2000-2003. no water cooled alternator and so much less things to worry about compared to the v8.
|
I've got over 140,000 on my 05 (purchased it new from Greenville SC). It's a pleasure to drive everyday for work, all interstate miles in the central to western part of North Carolina. I enjoy going to work everyday! No major issues at all (brakes, oil, windsheild wipers)....just the norm.
|
BMW engines are known to be great and long running... but the rest of the car can fall apart like the water pump, the shocks, the electronics... One thing they know how to make is a good engine, thats for sure.

Great thread!! Having just bought a used 2003 3.0i Sport (72,000 miles) I was worried about how it would last. Have the manual transmission so hopefully not too much to go wrong. Only problems at the moment are a couple of broken plastic catches and the air conditioning sometimes makes a noise like an airplane.
|
02 4.4 with 151,--- here. water pump replaced already at 130000 and thats about it (knock on wood).
|
01 3.0i here also . Very happy to hear our cars are doing that great. Mines is doing fine with only minor issues. Keep it up everyone.
108k miles |

Manual tranny must be a blast BTW! |
Wanted to bump this thread and see how everyone has been doing?
I'm at 111,855 miles on a 2002 3.0i. So far just routine type stuff replaced (besides aux fan under warranty) but now need a new steering rack at some point. Wheel bearings are shot too, but so far so good. Fingers crossed! How's everyone elses X? |

Glad to see quite a few X5 with that kinda mileage.
Just replace the WP on my 4.4i with 58k (well the upper hose radiator crack so I decide to overhaul the coolant system minus the radiator). FYI, the old WP with composite looks good, no play in the bearings, and turn smooth. Also the old thermostat looks clean, no rust, no gunk in it. Hope it'll make it to 100k and beyond, just got back from Seattle autoshow no cars I like is under $60k so have to keep this one going for a few more years. |
75k. just starting to get up there
|
68k - '05 3.0i
|
99,200 miles on my '02 3.0. So far, I had the oil seperator freeze up and blow the valve cover gasket very messy-- at 82,000 miles.
I changed the trans fluid to m1 at 96,000 miles... made a big difference in the shifting. I have some oil consumption 1 qt in 2,000 miles. Probably some blow by, I'm afraid to change the weight of the oil on this engine since BMW is so strict about oil weights and brands. I'm using M1 0w-40 at 7500 oci. The car is awesome, I hope to keep it to 200,000 miles or 6 more years. |
Our X5 just broke 66k on our 2003 3.0i last week. Our last big repair was back in January when we replaced the oil separator and the front transmission seal and rear main seal at 57k miles. This and a fan clutch assembly at 52k miles were the big repairs and everything else was a wear item that would need to get replaced over time. Our X5 has been trouble free for its whole life and I hope we get many more trouble free miles.
|
I have an 01 4.4. with 136k....still running great...other than pads and oil, no problems....
|
01 4.4 with 145K Running strong. Mostly normal wear and tear.
|
112k on '00 4.4i, original tranny, original tranny fluid...
@100k, replaced valley pan gasket, spark plugs... runs smooth like a champ... also have replaced oxy sensor, cam sensor, and other miscellaneaous items (e.g., 2 window regulators)... |
I'm a firm believer in religiously maintaining a car.
So...to get this kind of mileage, are people following the maint. schedule, or doing extra? Also, seems like 4.4 can crank out the miles like the 3.0. I would want to guess that an inline motor is more robust for the long haul than a V engine--but I'd really like to get a 4.4 and seems they both hold their own. When it comes to problems, is it just luck of the draw on any particular vehicle? |
nice!!!
|
OK I got mine just 2 weeks ago with 59,375 miles... it now has 59,917.... its a 2004 3.0 Auto...
lets see... |
177,000 miles and racking 'em up quickly. Mostly highway miles so things like swaybar links are just starting. Did do the RF axle due to CV boot tear but that's expected.
New plugs last week helped considerably, new air filter too but old was not so old. Noticed slight oil from VCG when changing the plugs but not a big deal. Thanks to all who post here I am happy to keep my X5 until I'm just tired of it but nothing beats the drive and feel of BMW! Happy Motoring All |
04 3.0i premium 130K
Oil change according to the gauge Differential/Tranny Oil replaced every other engine oil change Sparkplugs, W/P, belts replaced at 100K Knocking on Wood Trims, no problems at all~ except the rear light always need adjustment and cannot lock into place. Original Window regulators ^.^ (I lock all the windows so no one can open them! ) |
YES, tells us-did you change the trans fluid?
how about wheel bearings? Did you new spark plugs and O2 sensors at 100? what did you change in the suspension? |

How do you know when to change the timing chain/water pump. whats the secret for getting 193k miles? Do you service your car at bmw for all scheduled inspections?
|
Need to wake up this thread!! Probably one of the most important ones as it's why most visit the site. "How long will I get out of my X5 and how...?" I'm up to 197K. Just replaced a leaking coolant hose (heater) two days ago which means next weekend I'm replacing the rest ;). Might add the water pump to the list as well this coming weekend just in case.
|
Photonic,
You got a longs ways to go. You are just getting her broke in. There is a number of us now over 200,000. I have my eyes set on 400,000 now. |

My 2002 X5 3.0 has 138,000 miles and going strong. I bought it with 82,000 in Feb 2009. Sludged engine, clean it with many changes of mobil 1 at 7500 oci. Changed the (original) trans fluid with mobil1 at 93K I'm changing it again in 2 weeks, don't know if water pump has been changed.
Going strong except for electrical glitches. replace the main computer at about 100,000. the ABS controller replaced at 105k. Now I have a clunk coming from the suspension , I think its the bushings.:( money. I plan to keep this machine past 300,000. It runs and feels like a new car. I also pull a utillity trailer, Motorcycle trips 3K to 4K at a time, lumber hauling, yard work, garden tractor... I treat it like a pick up truck, then clean it and its ready for going out on the town!!! |

I change mine 3 times, running a few miles in between, to get MOST of the old fluid out. seems to work fine. |

Great!!
Nice, I have about 230,000 miles on my 02 x5 3.0! Original tranny and never had the fluid flushed! One thing that does suck however is the amount of oil this thing burns up. I have to drive around with a gallon of castrol syntec everywhere i go... One thing I have realized DO NOT EVER USE MOBIL 1 on beemers!!! it will ruin your engine!
|
Quote:
Please explain why you claim Mobil 1 will ruin a BMW engine. I'm curious as I have never heard this. |
Mobil 1
Quote:
|
Damn, my cousin has an E60 and an indi used Mobile 1 a FRAM!!!!! filter. I was pissed for him. I use only BMW oil on the BMW and Mobile 0w40 on Merc. OEM filters, nothing less.
I have a strange oil burning situation with my 3.0i; some weeks it will go though nearly half a quart, then it will go a month with not a drop of consumption?? it is so random. Approaching 100k on the X, and have been debating almost every day on wether to do partial trans flush. I may just leave it alone. |
Mine will be there soon!
I'm not there yet, but will be soon! I have a 2004 3.0 with 171,000 miles and I am very happy with my car! I have replaced the battery, tires, brakes, fuel pump and had a carbon deposit clean out on the car. I keep pretty tight to the maintenance schedule and always make sure to change the oil regularly. This car gets driven unmercifully daily and just keeps going...it is the best car I have ever owned. I am definately an X-5 fan!!
 |
My 01 X5 has done 149k and the only problem has been this self leveling supension light issue so really love my
X5 and been very reliable. Never let me down had from 5000K |
Good to hear we're pushing them. My plan is to push my 4.4 out to 300K. If I can do that without a major powertrain issue I'll be happy. I may change out the valve covers this weekend as well as finally getting to those heater hoses. I've got the SLS light as well but plan on swapping out the air for coilovers on all four corners. I'd rather spend the money on springs than chasing a moving target for 3K+
|
Wow, this is great. Our X5 is up to 1392_1. (Pixle lost problem) Other than regular fluid changes (Royal Purple 5w30) and a few window regulators, brakes, this is still a great looking and driving vehicle.
|
Somebody welcome me into the 200K club!! I'm just saying... Flipped it last week. I'm just saying..
|
Welcome, enjoy the next 100,000.

Roger that. Anything I should know before I get the wheel spacers speaking of mods. Thx

Front passenger door wont open from the outside(door handle seems stuck) Passenger rear door actuator(wont unlock electronically) Passenger tailight goes out when it wants to(circuit board looks damaged beyond repair) Passenger side fog light doesn't work(previous owner installed depos but forgot the wire for the headlight?!not very fun) Seems like my passenger side had a stroke now that i look at all the problems lol |

|
Let's start a high mileage club here. Thoughts?
|
High mileage club sounds cool!
|
Of course we'd have to qualify what the term "high mileage" means. Original engine and or transmission? Then there's proving the mileage. Go on honor? How would we prove? I personally don't think we need to go that far. Could we get an icon (badge) next to our names based on the mileage obtained? 100k,150k,200k... What up!!?
|
2004 plate 208,000 miles replacement disks all round a clutch a battery 3 battery disconnects to kick start cd/radio/satnav blue tooth never worked properly BMW Guilford blamed my phones! Ecu software updated after injector error message.
Generally very happy until panoramic sunroof wouldn't close pushed it back with carving fork prong and saved a trip to have expensive replacement. My 1992 535 has done 230,000 miles and is held together by rust  |

100k sounds like a good number to me.most people get rid of their X by then
|
I hit the money shot last night on the way home from a buddies house. Mine is original transmission and original fluid. However my Torque Converter is shot and needs replacement. Contemplating just replacing the TC just to see how far the stock trans will last but also dont want to pull the transmission twice if it takes a crap on me soon after... What to do What to do?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...007_001912.jpg |
what led you to the conclusion that your torque converter is ruined(im not saying your wrong, im just asking so i can look out for the problem myself)
|
My ODBII system threw a Torque Converter Excessive Slippage Code. And continues to do so if Im on the highway for over 30 minutes at a time. The Torque Converter does not lock up in Overdrive hence the excessive slippage.
|
I work a mile from home and thats where I do 97% of my driving so If I continue to limp it around it shouldnt bite me in the a$$. Im saving and planning now to do a TC swap.
|
I hit the 206206 miles with 206 miles of fuel range the other day.
|
260,000 going strong don't you just love diesels :D
|
Now up to 207K!
Mine is actually gas...it is a 3.0 and I am getting about 18.8 MPG....so far so good, minimal repairs, just really diligent on my maintenance!
|
Mine is a 2002 3.0 diesel (I live in Europe) with 251 000 km on the clock. Normal endemic X5 issues (suspension arms & bushings, final stage resistor) but original diff's, water pump & engine. My transmission is fine (5 speed manual) and NV125 transfer case, but I've proactively changed oil on EVERYTHING, even the "lifetime" oil. I've also added magnetic drain plugs everywhere, as BMW no longer puts them on manual transmissions and didn't on the transfer case. There is an improved PCV for the diesel engines, a better part and not as much an issue as the 6 cylinder or V-8 gasoline engines. My mileage is around 8 L / 100 km (combination of city & highway), goes to 7 L or better on highway only.
|
Well sitting here researching as I brought my 02 4.4 with 107k on vacation in the mountains and now I am getting the 2 - 1 hard downshift. Great timing. I will try the reset procedure in the morning and see if that helps.
|
I just rolled over 170,000 miles. We bought it @ 129,000 and fell in love the day I took it for a test drive. We got a very good deal and it was obvious to me upon close inspection that the previous owner took very good care it. We took it to a mechanic who also agreed it had been well maintained. Other than the fuel pump going out @ 144,000 its been a very solid and dependable truck and a joy to drive. Many people are shocked to find out its a 2001 as they think it looks much newer. The usual "wear and tear" items such as the door carrier and the Final Stage Relay have been fairly easy DIY thanks to this site.
