Bought a BUM X5...WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Guys, after two E46's I purchased a 2005 X5 4.4i (V8) with 32,000 miles on it. I bought the car back in November and had no problems for a couple of months.
1 Month Ago: I got my first check engine light. Took the car in, they said there were no problems, gave the car back. 3 Weeks Ago: Check engine light. Car in for service. BMW diagnosis "Engine Misfires". Replaces gas cap. Gave car back. Last Week: Check engine light. Car back to BMW. Again - Engine Misfires. They test drove...the car "went crazy on them" (never happened to me). THEY'VE HAD THE CAR FOR A WEEK AND HAVE NO SOLUTIONS YET. So, I called the Pre-Owned manager and left a message yesterday to tell him that I'm kind of apprehensive. Of course...the only two times we've gotten snow in Cincinnati, the X5 has been in for service. Kind of defeats the purpose! Should I "raise hell" and demand a replacement? WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Thanks for the input! I'm on edge... |
What do you mean by "went crazy on them"? Are you under a warranty?
I would hope that a week is long enough to diagnose the problem and come up with a solution. I would definately start calling them once or twice a day until they gave me some sort of answer on what is wrong with the car and how they plan to fix it. I don't think I would start screaming replacement just yet. |
hey, thanks for the reply. i have no clue what he meant by "went crazy"...he just said it "rode real rough and started acting up".
the car is CPO'd...but it's still hard to rest easy at night knowing that I just purchased the car and may be in for years of engine problems (and major ones, at that). I'll stay on top of them with phone calls...thanks. |
The 4.4 V8 is unfortunately prone to some engine issues, but it sounds like this is some glitch that can be fixed under warranty and then you should have a pretty good X on your hands. I would definately press them for an answer on what is going on though. A week with no answers or plans on how to go about correcting the issue is too long if you ask me. I could be wrong, but it sounds like you may be having an electrical issue.
I will say that you should be prepared to have more issues with the X than you most likely had with your 05 e46's. |
I wouldn't be concerned. Sounds like only one engine problem that you're dealing with. Also sounds like an incompetent service dept. Take it to another dealer.

The 4.4 is a solid engine with a long track record in many BMW models. Your problem will be fixed, or ask to speak with the service manager. Sorry for your initial poor impression, Good luck
|
If they don't have an answer yet..Take it to another dealer..if the second dealer has no answer in a reasonable amount of time...Go back to the first one and yes..demand a replacement..

Ask them for an explanation of "went crazy on them" I have a 2004 4.4 and have problems with the valuetronic system, that said the X5 is a great car and the 4.4 gives great performance. Do you have a extended warrantee? I assume that they gave you a BMW loaner? |
Have them check out SIB 110205 Replacing Intermediate Levers. Also, make sure you get a loaner.
