does not light up.
as the M5 knob does not have the P=park like x5 so the when i putted into PARK it NO light  the rest of lights are work normal N=nuetral light up D=drive light up

Kind of cool. Props for doing it, although I would prefer to see it light up in sport mode, since that is where it functions as the lights would indicate, and unfortunately the + and - are backwards...otherwise, great creativity!

mrbmwx5 03-10-2008 04:48 PM

i am working on the circuit right now to make it light up when in drive and sport mode

jvit27 03-10-2008 04:50 PM

Great knob. I added the same one to my SMG E46 M3 and it was one of the best mods you can do!

dr.jay 03-10-2008 05:07 PM

Very Cool, how much did the it run you?

mrbmwx5 03-10-2008 05:14 PM

the knob $180 (wire harness is my custom made)

Tom G. 03-10-2008 05:27 PM

Looks good :)

For the ultimate in the M5 knobs check these out:

These are for the M3/M5/M6 applications - but you get the idea ;)

villajoe 03-10-2008 05:33 PM

great idea!

blueagle 03-10-2008 06:41 PM

Try the HARTGE shift knob too. You can buy one that is also illuminated.

Bimmer360 03-10-2008 06:43 PM

That CF knob kinda pricey :(

Bimmer360 03-10-2008 06:45 PM

mrbmwx5,
would u sell custom harness to fellow X5er's?

blueagle 03-10-2008 06:45 PM

bimmer360,

You are right. I have one in my X5 but not the illumintaed one.

yes, but i have to test out the circuit to make the light works for the D and SD mode as some people may refer. and i can make the custom POWER button to work that when you want go to sport mode with out moving the level to the left that i had done many for the E60

JaySpec7 04-28-2008 02:11 AM

Any updates on this?

Thanks! I bought the shift knob and love the looks of it, but was not able to get any of the lighting to work... so I'm guessing it requires a more elaborate wiring harness.

do you have the shifter already?
If you can't wait for the DIY i can sho you how to...

Chris_731 01-20-2009 06:56 PM

I do have the knob already... any tips would be appreciated!

Sudesh 01-20-2009 06:57 PM

That looks great! I actually done the E46 SMG shifter a few years ago on my first 4.6is, I also adapted the shift pattern so it worked in conjunction with the actual shift of the car. I was thinking of going with the the M5 one this time round and doing the same as you, but I'm also planing on adapting the shift pattern on the M5 one also.

Not a geat pic but I'll see if I have another, you can see the shift pattern on the knob is the same as that on the base of the gear surround.

It's 25162282750

Tischer (getbmwparts.com) has it for just shy of $200.

Let me know if you pick one up.

JumpMan495 02-27-2009 02:42 PM

fantastic job! where do u hide the auto shift knob safety switch on the front? the smg knob does not have that button switch.

you right about the safety switch on the knob the SMG doesnt have it,
but you can not go from P to D without pressing the brake
or from D to P while the car is in motion so no need to worries about the safety switch.;)

JumpMan495 02-27-2009 05:03 PM

thanks. my gf saw this thread and she wants me to help her doing 1 on her X5. someone actually did the whole thing on an E39

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ge_2008_m5.jpg

is it possible to install deck and buttons on the side too?

all those buttons ...there is only one will need ( power) if you have the paddles shifter like mine.
and dont like to move the shifter to the left all you need is press the power button and shift it from the padlles
otherwise no need to install any buttons at all.

JumpMan495 02-27-2009 05:09 PM

ok, now the pic is up....is it possible to have the full smg deck on the x5 or e39?

Did you ever get this fully functional? You mentioned you would be willing to make the harness and sell them. Did you change your mind?

Not sure but I think there are several on here who wanted the harness or the know how on how to make one and a write up on how to install this and get it fully functional like you have. So with that said I would need a complete comprehensive write up and the harness to make it happen as I don't have the electrical knowledge to do this myself. Also I have an E39 (530 automatic) so also not sure if everything is the same as yours would be?

Let me know what you think you might want for the harness to make it worth your while to gather and assemble all the parts and a write up would be needed. Let me know what you think. I'll pm you my e-mail.

Do you use your existing boot or does this boot fit? Looks like you get the entire assembly with the know, leather boot, etc? I'm curious if these will fil on an E39 but it appears someone has done it but no details.

m3brad 03-22-2009 10:25 AM

Any word on the harness?

themoth 09-27-2009 10:00 PM

I can make the harness, have sold 2 on here already...

Yeah how much and is it all functional?

m5james 10-12-2009 08:22 PM

He already said it's functional in post #33, I just haven't seen a price from either MrBMWX5 or TheMoth.

mrbmwx5 10-12-2009 08:48 PM

Send me a case of Heineken.... I post up some instruction.:D

MRBMWX5 said he got it working completely but I don't see where The Moth said he did and he's the one stepping forward offering to make the harness.

m5james 10-12-2009 09:44 PM

I would assume if he's offering to sell harnesses, that also means that he's figured it out and got it working correctly also.

lezmtaylor 12-28-2009 12:42 PM

Hi there,
I'm in the UK, have done the paddleshift conversion in my 2002 E53 4.4, can this also be done and has the wiring harness been sorted with prices?
Lez

dpgx5 01-19-2010 03:22 AM

Anyone else sucessfully done this mod? Do you need a harness?

Thanks

Chris_731 01-19-2010 10:53 AM

If someone can offer up a diagram or directions I will make several of these.

m5james 01-20-2010 05:22 PM

I think he offered to make harnesses, but I've never heard anything after that.

Dubs 01-20-2010 11:44 PM

I'd be in for a harness and a how to would be great.

Can someone please provide a part number for this, i tried the one in a previous post but got no hit @ getbmwparts.

Thanks

Dubs

mdubs9 08-20-2019 08:09 PM

does this fit right on with out dremel / modification?

stevlover 03-03-2020 06:34 AM

Hello all I know this a really old thread but I am just now discovering it and I was curious on if there was an official DIY to do this and if that harness was completed as I am very interested in doing this to my newly acquired X5

amancuso 03-03-2020 08:14 AM

The shift gate is all wrong on that knob. Doesn't match the car anymore. Mods like this are questionable, but very subjective. Hard pass for me.
