///M5 SMG shift knob in X5
Here are some pictures that i took with my Nokia N95
i seen some people on here had done the M3 smg to x5 but i want more because the M5 smg knob light up which is M3 smg knob does not light up. as the M5 knob does not have the P=park like x5 so the when i putted into PARK it NO light  the rest of lights are work normal N=nuetral light up D=drive light up car in park. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2243/...2e7d7d7772.jpg car in reverse. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3042/...d73f66b22e.jpg in Neutral http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2399/...25e2f9cd36.jpg in drive. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3134/...85a1de8e60.jpg in sport mode with no light because the M5 knob have only one mode for light so i hook up to drive mode only (and x5 have two light mode for D and SD) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2143/...c8eb232d35.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2300/...2c22cc0e79.jpg |
Kind of cool. Props for doing it, although I would prefer to see it light up in sport mode, since that is where it functions as the lights would indicate, and unfortunately the + and - are backwards...otherwise, great creativity!
|
i am working on the circuit right now to make it light up when in drive and sport mode
|
Great knob. I added the same one to my SMG E46 M3 and it was one of the best mods you can do!
|
Very Cool, how much did the it run you?
|
the knob $180 (wire harness is my custom made)
|
Looks good :)
For the ultimate in the M5 knobs check these out: http://www.europeanautosource.com/im...breshift02.jpg http://www.europeanautosource.com/im...breshift01.jpg These are for the M3/M5/M6 applications - but you get the idea ;) |
great idea!
|
Try the HARTGE shift knob too. You can buy one that is also illuminated.
|
That CF knob kinda pricey :(
|
mrbmwx5,
would u sell custom harness to fellow X5er's? |
bimmer360,
You are right. I have one in my X5 but not the illumintaed one. |

Thanks! I bought the shift knob and love the looks of it, but was not able to get any of the lighting to work... so I'm guessing it requires a more elaborate wiring harness. |

do you have the shifter already? If you can't wait for the DIY i can sho you how to... |
I do have the knob already... any tips would be appreciated!
|
That looks great! I actually done the E46 SMG shifter a few years ago on my first 4.6is, I also adapted the shift pattern so it worked in conjunction with the actual shift of the car. I was thinking of going with the the M5 one this time round and doing the same as you, but I'm also planing on adapting the shift pattern on the M5 one also.
Not a geat pic but I'll see if I have another, you can see the shift pattern on the knob is the same as that on the base of the gear surround. http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j7...5/DSC00563.jpg |

Do you have the part number? |

It's 25162282750 Tischer (getbmwparts.com) has it for just shy of $200. Let me know if you pick one up. |
fantastic job! where do u hide the auto shift knob safety switch on the front? the smg knob does not have that button switch.

but you can not go from P to D without pressing the brake or from D to P while the car is in motion so no need to worries about the safety switch.;) |
thanks. my gf saw this thread and she wants me to help her doing 1 on her X5. someone actually did the whole thing on an E39
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ge_2008_m5.jpg is it possible to install deck and buttons on the side too? Quote:

and dont like to move the shifter to the left all you need is press the power button and shift it from the padlles otherwise no need to install any buttons at all. |
ok, now the pic is up....is it possible to have the full smg deck on the x5 or e39?

and i didnt change my mind about selling them. how much do you want to pay for just the harness?:D |
Quote:
Let me know what you think you might want for the harness to make it worth your while to gather and assemble all the parts and a write up would be needed. Let me know what you think. I'll pm you my e-mail. |

Any word on the harness?

He already said it's functional in post #33, I just haven't seen a price from either MrBMWX5 or TheMoth.

I would assume if he's offering to sell harnesses, that also means that he's figured it out and got it working correctly also.
|
Hi there,
I'm in the UK, have done the paddleshift conversion in my 2002 E53 4.4, can this also be done and has the wiring harness been sorted with prices? Lez |
Anyone else sucessfully done this mod? Do you need a harness?
Thanks |
If someone can offer up a diagram or directions I will make several of these.
|
I think he offered to make harnesses, but I've never heard anything after that.
|
I'd be in for a harness and a how to would be great.
Can someone please provide a part number for this, i tried the one in a previous post but got no hit @ getbmwparts. Thanks Dubs |
does this fit right on with out dremel / modification?
|
Hello all I know this a really old thread but I am just now discovering it and I was curious on if there was an official DIY to do this and if that harness was completed as I am very interested in doing this to my newly acquired X5
|
The shift gate is all wrong on that knob. Doesn't match the car anymore. Mods like this are questionable, but very subjective. Hard pass for me.
