X5 4.8 top speed
Been on some long drives recently and had to 4.8 up to 220km/h, but have a couple of questions about the top speed.
Is the car limited at all? Can you go as quickly in Sports mode as in Drive? Once sport mode is engaged the RPM's rise and the shift mode changes, but will it allow you to go as quickly with this different ratio in sixth? Might have to go and try it i guess, but would just like to know. |
Sports mode is where the car will give you maximum performance.Sports(manual) mode will enable you to change gears at higher RPM and thus also achieving max.speed.(about 265 kph on speedo, which is 250+ true speed.
What rpm were you doing @220 kph? |
I read somewhere that the top speed on X5 4.8 is 153 mph.

What should happening in my case? Thanks!! |
4.4 230km/h
I clocked 230km/h. 5th gear gave 6000rpms then changed to 6th and the revs dropped to 4500. There was still more umph but didn't have enough road
Manual claims top speed at 240km/h, in my case (2005 4.4) I would expect some electronical limiter, cause I am sure I'd pass 240! You guys with the 4.8's - Respect  I actually filmed doing 220km/h on my phone but somehow can't transfer it to my computer. Maybe someone could help out. My mobile phone is the Samsung SGH-D500E. It's actually a nice piece of film done on the Italian highway to Venice. |

Does your phone have a hardwire USB connection to the computer? If so, you can open the phone as a device under "My computer" and then copy the files over. That's what I do with my Audiovox SMT5600. |
It's limited to 153mph. Given the drag that car puts out I don't think it would ever see the end of the speedometer. Not to mention the fact that the majority of speedometers become inaccurate over certain speeds....of course..when the cop clocks you at 176mph then you can tell everyone you hit it...from jail of course :)
153mph per BMW |

sport mode is only a throttle map change. it uses a more aggressive air/fuel map for the given variables (throttle position, change in accelerator pedal, temp, etc) it does not raise the rpm limiter. Quote:

I've seen just a click under 160mph on my speedometer in my X5 4.8is which I did a few weeks ago on a quiet Autoroute. I was following a Ferrari 355GTS at the time.. :D I've not felt any limiter kick in so I would suspect it will be like on the M3/M5 where it only intervenes at around 167mph. The 4.8is will be limited more by air resistance than any electronics but I would estimate that allowing for error it will manage 155mph quite comfortably.
I reached 160mph (indicated) in D by the way. |
is there anyway to take the electronic limiter off? can you ask the dealer to?
|
BMW's are well known for having speedos that read 5-10% faster than the car is actually going. The speedo may not be the best judge of actual speed.

Dealer most likely only has Dinan software available (other then stock)... |

Mine doesn't has any speed limiter. BTW, my 4.8is is euro spec and has 360HP instead regular U.S. spec with just 355HP!! I have reached 262km/h in my car in a highway but I put VP race fuel uleaded on it :D :D |

It's electronically limited..in US spec at least.. |

Lucky guys.
X5 4.4i 2004 won't go any faster then a smidge over 130mph. |
with current gas prices...I'm not trying to bust any land speed records in a 2 ton plus SAV :)
Save that for the Z (160mph limiter by the way, but my ECU was reprogrammed in the Z) ;) |

I was doing just over 235km/h (over 146 mph) on the PA turnpike 3 weeks ago behind an SVT mustang on my way to philly. It had more but I got tired of my wife beating my arm. She still had a huge smile on her face after the run!! :D |
Very glad to see plenty of forum members trying out the full potential of their X's.
Need to try a bit harder than 220km/h it would seem. Thanks for all the answers about sport and drive mode. Was very curious about why there is an RPM rise from D to S. Seems just like taking off 'Overdrive' on several older cars i've driven like the MGB GT. |
My X5 went to about 132. The 330xi goes to about 140.

Is it because I am aerodynamically limited? I do not have the Sport Package, could that be the reason? Were you slipstreaming? Possibly that is the case? |
BMW installed a 130mph limiter on the latest model years  - maybe the chip - it disappears with a Dinan upgrade  - Hyjk "you're a better man than I", too many people on that road  - out here you can see stretches of interstate for more than 10 miles and count less than 10 vehicles on all 4 lanes. :wow: Had to laugh at your wife's reaction(both) :bustingup

Do you guys feel safe in the X at 150 mph??? I was pushing my 4.8 to around 135 and it didn't feel that safe to me...but then it could also be the fact that I was used to my M3...dunno...

I've always driven in sport mode anyway, so I never really did much of a comparison... |

Same feeling in a R230 (SL Mercedes). Not the same thing in a LS430. The LS430 is scary because it still seems like you're going 80mph. Just a whistle.. it's a weird feeling in that car. |
I did 160mph (showed in speedo) in my 4.8is and I felt the car stable as my SL55 AMG.
The air suspension is just incredible in this car!! |
i rocked my 3.0i at 121 mph the other day. i want it to go faster though. i need to know how!
|
I went a little over 130mph with an 04' 4.4 X5 on my speedometer last night on the 405S. Yeah it was rock solid, and I was pretty confident enough with it. 110 mph cruising limit speed would be great :) I don't know why you would feel less confident on a 4.8 IS. At 130mph+ the X felt that it had more punch to it, but I never had enough road and the safe opportunity to max out the full potential of the engine.
BTW, maxed out a 2000 4.4 eurospec x5 at 220 Kmh. It should be better for the newer 4.4 engines. |
i dont know how anyone could not feel safe going fast in that....i mean, i feel safer driving that than i do goin 80 in a cadillac escalade or 120 in a bentley continental gt
