Newbie with question about buying an X5.
 

I am in the process of looking to buy a 2004,05 or 06 X5 3.0.
I have seen some great deals at CarMax.
Has anybody dealt with them in regards to buying an X5?
I have checked out some CPOs at some dealers here and they appear to be no better than some I have checked out at CarMax. The CPOs are 7-9k more in price (of course with that you get the CPO inspection and warranty).
I checked with the local BMW dealer here and I can buy an extended warranty for $2500 that covers it for another 6 years should I not buy a CPO.

The extended warranty does not add another six years to the warranty, it is six years total. The warranty is 2 years or 100,000 miles, on top of the original 4 years or 50,000 mile warranty. An X with no warranty at all gets very expensive, even with a warranty it is expensive.

Speaking of Touareg, check out the very last Consumer Reports on the Touareg reliability marks. May be a nice vehicle, but reliability is extrememly bad. Only Range Rover is worse.

I should have clarified. The dealer sells an aftermarket extended warranty that I could purchase. It is not a OEM extended warranty. The service department says that the BMW warranty and this other company (cant remember the name) are by far the easiest extended warranty to deal with. If I bought a Carmax X5 I was going to purchase the extended warranty from the dealer. I confirmed with the dealer the aftermarket warranty starts on the day of warranty purchase (6 years if I bought the 6 year warranty). The only catch is the mileage has to be under 35k per the contract. Again this is an aftermarket not BMW warranty.
If I go the CPO route I would just rely on the BWM CPO warranty.

Slightly confusing info...the BMW stlr is humping a 3rd party warranty; yes, many do.
Is it good/accepted at other dealers and/or Indies or must one have the work done at that dlr?

The name of the warranty and the re-insurer that backs it, would be helpful; you could do a quick
GOOG on that co. name and see what kind of info pops up.

That "catch" of the car has to be "under 35k", (miles I assume), is pretty damn unusual, as the mileage
is not close to expiration for the oem BMW warranty, unless the "time" via delivery date is about to expire.
Most 3rd party warranties prefer your current orig. oem warranty to still be in effect or else there is an upcharge;
requiring a car to be at "35K or less" is damn weird on a 50K warranty, imo.

Stlrs love to sell CPO cars: the "inspection" is a wash job and they know BMW Mutha is hot to help the sltrs move
the ever growing inventory; thus, BMW Mutha is willing to cough up to cover some major items under the CPO program.

Next to that, some stlrs wanna hump their "brand" of 3rd party warranty, which I guarantee they make some
good margin on, when they sell it to you.

None of that is bad...but I'd dig harder to find out about that Stlr's warr. that he's pitching.

In the end, I would personally not buy a used X5 without some kind of warranty coverage or,
unless I wanted to become familiar with my scoot board and working under the car, on a regular
basis again. Some kind of safety is rec'd for a used X purchase, imo.

I purchased my 02 X5 4.4 form Carmax last year and I have to say that I have been very happy with everything from the buying process to the support from the warranty department. My particular X had the option of buying Carmax's Maxcare extended warranty, which I purchased. Here is the great thing about that warranty, Carmax allows you to take your car to their service stations or to any BMW dealer your choose for warranty repairs. Co-pay is $50 at Carmax and $75 with BMW. I bought the car from Carmax and took it to a BMW dealer the next week for a once over. Needless to say, they found 2 things that needed repair and took care of them through the Maxcare warranty. The BMW dealers want to work on your car to get paid, so they will look for anything they can to fix. Carmax has agreed to all necessary repair so far, which have totaled well over twice what the warranty originally cost me and I still have 2 years or 14k miles left. Another great thing about the Carmax warranty is that it costs far less than a warranty purchased directly from BMW. For me it was a no-brainer. I got the car I wanted, didn't have to pay CPO prices, and got a warranty honored by BMW dealers at a fraction of the cost. I would definately buy from Carmax again as long as it had a Maxcare warranty option. I bought my X with the intention of only going to BMW dealers for warranty work and so far it has paid off bigtime. Also, my BMW service adviser calls the Maxcare warranty department and confirms all repairs. All I do is set an appt with BMW and drop off the car. Nothing else.

I am not really hip on the whole carmax experience. I really think the cars they offer are over priced. I just bought my 04' X5 last month and did quite a bit of shopping around. The ones they had were all very rough for the mileage and had fewer options. I have found in the past the best places to buy higher end cars is from lower end new car dealers. The lower end dealers Hyundia, Kia, Ford, etc do not have the clients come through their showroom that are looking for highline autos. as far as warranties go I just purchased mine from warranty direct which seems to be highly recommended. I was able to get the 4 year 100k warranty with airbag protection and $50 deductable for right around 3k.

If you dont mind me asking....what did you pay for the max care warranty?

That was one of the factors that made me start looking at the X5.
This forum blows away any of the VW sites.
