panoramic sunroof closing issue
 

05 4.4i, i recently noticed that when closing the roof it doesnt close all by it self like it used to if ya pressed the button foward, it stops every few inches, and ya have to keep pressing it until its closed properly, it opens fine, i can press it twice and it opens up, but closing just stops every few inches. any suggestions are welcomed before i have BMW figure it out

I have sean this issue on the board before, use search, I think it had something to do with safety and if there was surten amount of resistence it wil stop

I had an issue with my pano roof just last month. Mine would open, but the passenger side rear of the pano would not close. The safety thing E5 was refering to is incase someone or something is caught in the sunroof while its closing, its designed to stop automatically. To prevent injury or damage to the roof mechanism. My dealer took a quick look and decided the entire pano cassette (as he called it), needed replacing. Just took one day at the dealer and they upgrade it to the newer, "better" (as he put it) pano roof. Apparently, they fail often.... Not sure if this is your case, but thought i'd share my recent experience. Be sure to check if anything is lodged in your rails like rocks, branches.... things that can fly up and get caught in there. Could be something simple like that. Worse case scenario, you'll get a new sunroof, which includes the felt headliner slider that opens up when you just want to let the sun in. Good Luck!

I've read in the owner's manual that if there a power interuption or other similar issue when operating the pano roof, it will need to be reset. Unfortunately the folks that do this (per the manual) is your friendly BMW service tech.

On a side note, mine is in the shop now for the front panel binding when it pops up in vent mode. The tech found the black receiver channel (what the back edge of the front panel sets in to go flush) was bent and snagging on the panel.

After replacing this part, the tech has to "re-intialize" the roof so it properly sequences again. Hope this helps...

When resetting the panoramic sunroof, it cycles through two modes. The first is Normalisation, where the end positions are learnt. The second is Initialisation, where the characteristic curve is learnt.
The procedure takes 75 seconds. It begins by having the floating roofliner in the open position and the sunroof completely closed. The centre of the sunroof switch is then pressed and held in the Lift position. Note: the switch must be kept pushed for the whole procedure. The roof then moves to the lift position, the floating roofliner closes then opens, the sunroof then closes from the lifted position, then opens and closes fully, the floating roofliner then closes and the procedure is finished. If you release the switch before the procedure is finished, you must start again.

For non panoramic sunroof, after sunroof raises to the lift position, hold button for another 20 secs and until the sunroof "jiggles" at the open position, release switch for a maximum of 5 secs, then hold down the switch in the raising position until the sunroof has returned to the closed position after a complete opening movement. Release the switch.

Thanks for that great info! :thumbup: This should fix Stevelp99's issue. I don't know why they (BMW) don't include this procedure in the manual. Guess they need to keep their techs in a job.

Nice sunny day and had the panoramic roof open, when came to close it from the raised positions, the far rear left hand corner (as you sit in it) would not close. It seemed to try but just as though the anti - jam function was in operation it would not close at all. Could not see anything in the rails and tried some lube spray on the wedge but it still would not close.

Bit of a problem if the weather was closing in so ran it straight down to the stealer for a look. Initial reaction from a tech was - "Oh! had one in yesterday with the same thing - it will need a new roof". The service manager booked it in for a diagnostic and guess what - told it needs a new roof but they had contacted BMW UK and to my utter amanzement and his, they had agreed to 100% parts and 100% labour contribution. Said he rarely sees a 100% contribution.
Also said that it was an updated part that would be fitted.

Told me the roof was £ 1995 inc VAT and labour booked for 5 hours would have been £ 700 -

The car is exactly one year out of Warranty (2004 model) with 38,000 miles on the clock

I am to say the least very pleased !!!
I think that this must be an acknowledged issue within BMW otherwise I cannot see why they would go so far.
