CAR'S FIXED - CPO Questions...Please weigh in!
 

Guys,

Many of you have weighed in on my "Intermediate Lever" troubles over the last few weeks. I finally go the car back (3 weeks later) and it seems to be running well. BUT - in the back of my mind, I'm worried about the car (long term)...it comes out of the new car warranty this coming December.

A few questions:

1.) Is there a deductible when you take a CPO'd car in for services that are covered under the CPO warranty?

2.) Under CPO, how much does an average oil change/ service cost? Deductible??

3.) Are wiper blades, etc. still free at the dealership when you're out of the new car warranty? I'm assuming they're not...

4.) LOANER CARS - still provided when you're under the CPO??

Under the CPO there is no deductible you have to pay... just ask BMW of NA......wiper blades are not free if you are out of the free maintance program..... and you should be able to get a loaner under CPO no questions ask....;)

some answers for you, as my own X5 warranty expires in December later this year as well...
1. No deductable unless it is a problem that falls outside of warranty, then normal shop labor rates and parts cost apply.
2.I have always done this at my friend's garage so basically i pay for the filter and oil. I would never do this at the dealer unless it was covered under the maintenance warranty (which is different from CPO). CPO does not cover oil changes and you will probably pay the full cost.
3. Wiper blades, oil, filter, brake pads and rotors are covered under the maintenance warranty. Not CPO. Just so you know, CPO also doesnt cover certain electronic problems like NAV.
4. Loaners are provided to CPO cars provided the car was originally purchased from that dealership and not if you go to another bmw dealer as their policy states... I have seen a small BMW dealership give a loaner to a friend's car that was purchased from another dealer but that was the only instance ive seen that happen...

Just know that the maintenance and CPO cover different things. CPO is also does not offer true bumper to bumper protection however it does cover enough to justify having it.

I could be wrong but Ive heard it runs nearly $200 for parts and labor, not to mention scheduling for an appointment a week or two in advance, and doing the early morning drop off... the joys of dealer work :)

An oil and filter change is about $90-$100 at a dealer. An Oil Service (BMW code word phrase for checking a list of items on top of the oil and filter change) can be up to $200. Many dealers don't promote doing just an oil and filter change, as their shops are already full.

Good to hear it's running good. I doubt you'll have any other issue quite as serious as this in the future. Regarding your questions:
1. Yes there is a $50 deductible. Also, some dealers will charge you for diagnosis, but that is pretty much dealer dependent.
2. Oil changes and other scheduled maintenance doesn't fall under the CPO, they fall under an extended maintenance warranty which you need to purchase separately if you are interested in it. It will extend your current free maintenance to 6 years or 100,000 miles. If your X5 has less then 50,000 miles or 4 years old now the extended maintenance will cost you $1695 retail ($1495 is dealer cost). If your X5 is less then 5 years old with 60,000 miles or less, the extended maintenance will cost you $1895 retail ($1695 is dealer cost). Personally I would do it since one full brake job alone will cost you around $800, an oil change usually around $150 (includes microfilter change) and you'll at least have had to do the Inspection 1 which BMW usually charges around $1000 for.
3. Not free unless you have the extended maintenance warranty.
4. In my experience loaner cars are entirely dealer dependent. I don't schedule service unless I can get a loaner. No loaner, they don't get my business.

On # 1 there is no deductible but there is a $50 'handling charge' per visit (not per item to be fixed). Varies between dealerships whether or not they actually charge you this.

My local dealership provides a loaner for CPO visits even though I did not purchase the car there (Tate BMW - Annapolis). There is a $50 fee per visit.

CPO does not cover normal maintenance or any failure from "wear" parts. I perform all normal maintenance myself on all my cars. The CPO is good to have in case of failures of the motor or tranny (not too common). The value of a CPO car is debatable:dunno:
