im starting to really hate bimmers
short circuit on the radio unit. must replace entire unit for $610 + $125 diagnosis fee + $50 deductible. shits under cpo and im still spending shitloads of cash on repairs. bimmers fucking suck in quality. stick with benz or lexus

Yep... just evidence here that CPO DOES NOT COVER EVERYTHING. it does not cover electronics... Yeah, having a bimmer or any car has its pros and cons...

mrbmwx5 - where did you get those fogs? Is your pic photoshopped?
Original poster: why do you have to pay a deductable if you paid for the parts? I think the "diagnostics fee" is the dumbest thing i've ever heard of. Maybe alot of people were bringing their cars to BMW to diag the issue then saying "ok thanks, bye!" and bringing it to their indie shop to fix it. |
[quote=rastaFarai]mrbmwx5 - where did you get those fogs? Is your pic photoshopped?
no is not photoshopped HID fogs 10k from here http://stores.ebay.com/buyhid2007 and its been two years with out any problem. |

OK my turn....Just got a call from stealer....I had a battery drain that turned out to be a bad rheostat/fan behind the glove box....which drained the battery completely to zilch causing my key to be decoded.Oh and by the way I needed my drive belts changed and a front brake job. P.s. My Beemer was serviced 2 months ago with no mention of the issues mentioned above. end result....$2080.00 not bad for a car that only has 32,000 miles. I still love the car though...Just thought I'd whine a little....OK I'm better now.....good luck.

This site is probably the wrong site to say that, because the other 21,285, oops, 21,284 people logged on this site most likely like BMWS. You should make a BMWsucks.com for this type of thread.

They are worse than BMW and will cost you as much or more to repair. Step over to Lexus if you view your car as an automotive appliances and want reliability with no emotion. The X5 is a LUXURY car. When things break it is not going to be cheap to repair. That is the case with pretty much any expensive car. Is this repair the worst that has happened to you in your ownership? What else have you addressed? |
Well when I purchased the car I knew it would be expensive to repair....ps the rheostat total was 400 bucks the rest was general maintainence belt brakes etc...I pull a bass boat all over the state so it's not a big deal...maintainence is maintainence.

CPO ain't original Warranty or, orginal Maintenance.
It's a safety net for engine/trans and major stuff. Sorry you don't like the X or, feel its quality is inadequate... That watch on your wrist probably looks better hanging out the window of a Benz or Lexus. GL,mD |
patek philippe,
You have to realize what happens to you does not happen to all of X5s. Some X5 go bad as early as 30K, but it doesnt mean that all issues should and will occur at 30K. It also depends on how you use your car. profanity is totally uncalled for and not necessary. have you owned a benz? have you been to MB forums? You might be surprise to know the issues that they are having as well. I mean, i believe good and bad happens to all cars having an AMG is no difference. |

Sleepless,
I purchased my X Used in 06 it had 19,000 miles and was still under warranty then it's an 03. I did purchase an extended warranty but that only covers scheduled maintainence. |
extended warranty covers maintenance? I thought extended warranty covers the drive train . Are you referring to the extended maintenance warranty which covers brakes pads, rotors, wipers and oil?
|
OT...I suspect eddy's car is out of oem warranty; he bought an Extended Maintenanc program,
but that deal does not cover warranty work, just oil changes, brakes, wear items that are considered maintenance. Not sure I would care about "maint" w/no warranty, but diff'n strokes. GL,mD |
Quote:
WTF? Ahh all that is covered under CPO, you need to learn to actually talk with your SA. I had the exact same done....for damn near free. As MD said, you don't have a CPO you have a maintenance warranty to entirely different things with the latter being MUCH cheaper. As for the rambling...sell it then and buy a MB or Toyota......you'll probably be pissed at them too since your basing entire auto manufacturers on one used vehicle you've owned....didn't even buy it new and you're blaming an entire manufacturer. |

Brother - I truly think that this is total coincidence. I'm on my 8th Bimmer in 18 years and have not had any significant problems... starting with an 84 325e all the way up to an 07 335i. I'm a loyal owner and would never consider owing anything else. Give it another chance my man.
All my best to you. |
OK I'm back. Just got the X back and after showing the SA my BMW Maintenance Program Upgrade Agreement he scratched his head said the agreement was not in the computer then he disappeared into the back room for about 5 min. When he came back my total went from $2400.00 to $745.00
Problem 1 Dead battery was caused by Old style final stage blower motor resistor. part 157.75 labor 328.00 . Problem 2 troubleshoot why ignition key lost it's coding and to recode 246.00 Front brakes/rotors, new belts, and a ground wire for the rear brake light N/C Warranty |

If it was just that the central locking system and alarm didn't work I think you could have reset the code yourself. |
None of the button functions work.I could unlock and start car but that was all. Dealer Quote "Performed key initialization and remote function did not respond. Tested key with known good remote and key tested OK. Checked power supply to antenna and signal to general module but no response from key. Changed antenna with known good antenna and still no response from remote. Performed general module encoding as per team leader recommendation. Remote now functions properly."
SA commented that this is somewhat unusual but says that because the battery was drained so far down that this was probably the cause. So far no more problems. |
:angryfire :angryfire OK now I'm really pissed........Got my Beemer out of the shop thursday friday morning hooked up my bass boat loaded the car and headed for Lake Shasta (about 200 miles away). Launched the boat disconnected trailer and parked the rig for the weekend. Got up sunday morning to hook up trailer to pull boat out....DEAD AGAIN!!!!!!!
Thank goodness I have AAA. They came out in about 20 minutes and after trying to jump start my rig from under the hood we decided to remove spare tire and go right to battery. Success.. I Followed AAA to nearest Kragen to replace the brand new Dead Battery purchased 2 weeks earlier. Total cost 0 ...time wasted about an hour. We made it home. Once the boat was put up and the beemer garaged I decided to hook up my charger to see what the battery charge level was and battery was at 25% but it came up to fully charged after about an hour on 10 amp cycle. Leaving the battery on trickle charge until I can get the rig back to the shop tomorrow. The big question I have is that the car did run on a dead battery which to me means that the alternator is putting out power to run all the components of the car. The 2 batteries that have been replaced were new and fully charged. What could it be? :iagree: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: HELP |
similar thing happened to me, accept I ended up replacing the altenator, and after that I still had a battery drain. The shop I originally brought it to had no idea what it was (it was a meineke - yah i know bad idea but closest to my hosue at the time and i didnt have an indie).
The indie i eventually got referred too (south FL sorry) found the issue in 5 minutes. It ended up being the AC blower motor. Maybe it is for you, only thing I can think of is that this must be common on bmw if he knew what it was right away.. or had a guess, and was right. cost me about $200 for part and labor. well worth it. Until then I was doing what you're doing, trickle charging - and disconnecting my battery when i parked. I was scared each time i got out my car that it would die by the time i got back. I basically got it down to a science, I knew that if i left it off for 4hrs or more it would be dead when i returned. Also, if you notice that when u get a new battery, it takes 8+hrs to die, then slowly it takes less time. you probably have a drain.. that and your battery is getting weaker. but you may not let this go on for a week like I did.. i feel your pain.. |
Rasta....thanks for the support I called the dealer this am they are really sorry and will triple check the problem.I will mention the AC blower motor when I drop it off tomorrow. The vibe I got from my SA was that they didn't have a clue what the problem was and that the part the replaced (final stage resistor old style was the likely problem) was just an attempt based on past experience...I think if I'd left the car or another day it would have probably been dead again. Anyway it's gonna be there for a couple of days after they claim to fix it this time.....just to be sure.
|
yup. good idea. As long as they aren't charging you a "diagnostic fee"
That's the dumbest thing to me, i understand if you don't want people leaving and going to the indies, but if that's the case, credit the diag fee if they get it fixed with you. Yah, they never know - it's hard to find a drain. Usually they can hook it up to a machine with the car off and they can see where the current is being drawn. again.. good luck. |
:thud: They charged me the diagnostic fee the first time after the last discussion with the SA I don't think he would have the balls to try that again.....I'll keep you posted on what happens...... fingers crossed...
|
:banghead: I'm back......after spending 5 days at the stealer My SA called and said the problem with my car was a loose Battery cable. Cable was tightened and I was called to come pick up Vehicle. Because I've had alittle experience with cars (restoring 2 complete cars)and tinkering with vehicles over the last 40 years the cable excuse to me was BS..I called SA and asked them to check each day for 3 days to see if car would start each morning....he claimed it did.
I went to pick up car yesterday. While waiting for the car to be delivered two people that were behind me in line had their cars delivered and they drove off. I noticed while I was waiting I heard in the distance a Beemer alarm sounding. My car arrived..dirty but otherwise running.I jumped in car drove it 50 feet to customer parking(my girlfriend was looking at a 3 series with sales person).Cut car of locked doors with remote and went to find my girl. After about 15 min we returned to find that my car again was completely dead. This makes the third time in 2 weeks that this has happened. Anyone know of a good repair shop in the SF/Bay Area Because East Bay BMW Who's serviced several of my cars with no problems DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY CAR!!!!!!!!!!:angryfire |

I'm back......After dealer called and said that my second new battery from Kragen was defective.I authorized them to install a new 265.00 bmw battery and again check it for the next 3 days. They claimed to start it every day.I went to pick up X again. While waiting I heard my alarm in the distance AGAIN. 5 minutes later my car arrived and was left running. I got in took the key out of the ignition went to open trunk and guess what????? dead again.:bustingup I took the key back to SA and said fix my FKN CAR. He doubted that the car was dead until he tried to start it while other service customers looked on (Oh did he have egg on his face)
For the next 3 days he called me every morning to give me an update on my car. On the third day he called and said they did find a drain (which is what I told him the car had 4 visits earlier). The part was (climate control computer??) at a cost of about 1000.00 and that they had put almost 22 hours trouble shooting the problem and that they would give me a one time goodwill repair costing me nothing. The end result they detailed my car inside and out and after testing again for 2 days delivered my car to me at work. No problems for the last 3 days then my "check brake light" light came on. The same light that they repaired by modifying the ground was out again. My car now has 36,000 miles not bad for a 2003 and I'm leery about taking it on a road trip the end of this month New Mexico from SF Bay Area Ca. :dunno: |
Heck I feel like typing.... This is what the dealer repair order said.
"Customer states engine wont start. Checked battery draw after car is sleeping. Found 275 milliamp draw. Also car did not actually go to rest state. Accessed rear power distribution box and checked current out of each circuit. Fuses 200-207. Fuse 200 had 275 milliamp current flow. This fuse supplies power to front distribution box. Removed glove box and monitored current and pulled fuses. Almost 45 fuses. Pulled IHKA fuse and found current dropped. Removed IHKA and checked current on wire suppling IHKA. Found 240 milliamps flowing to IHKA. Also interior temp fan was operating. Replaced IHKA and coded. Rechecked current draw. Car went to sleep and current draw is 30 milliamps. Normal Battery soc should be checked for the next few days to insure car owner had a trouble free car. This is a onetime goodwill repair". |
Eddybilt, I'm feeling the same pains you went through, only I am dealing with the difficulty that my dealer doesn't want to diagnose due to the presence of an aftermarket subwoofer wire that the previous owner installed. The killer is that my 04 4.4 still has 3 months of factory warranty on it and they won't honor it with that wire still hooked up.
I noticed my climate control makes a whining noise when the temp/air is turned on. I wonder if I have a similar issue. I've used my car only 2x in the last month and the rest of the time it's been a 5000lbs paper weight in my driveway. It's making me miserable. |
..... and the beat just stopped again. After sitting 2 1/2 days car is dead again.....jumped it took it back to dealer...the SA is starting to get pissed....I guess the next step is to get the factory involved.
Well at least I got a 2008 X3 as a loaner. My only question with this loaner...what's up with the shifting.....feels like I'm starting in 3rd gear then it shifts up .....computer seems confused as to what gear it should be in. Anyway we'll see what happens with my x over the next week.... Sorry to hear about your car....I guess there are certain cars that just develop gremlins..... and we have two of them. |
I guess I kinda Hijacked this Thread
Doooooh:hijack:
|
Well just got an update from my SA.....He says they tried to start car again and go figure It's dead again. So they have the car wiring completely exposed and are checking each circuit...... They appear to be stumped..... anyone out here know if lemon law is applicable to a 2003 X5 second owner who purchased car while vehicle was under original factory warranty. With extended warranty???? Help
|
At this point i would think so.
|
Eddy,
No laughs on your problem X, but your posts are worth the price of admission, reading-wise, imo! What a fookin nightmare...one could not make this kinda stuff up. Hope you get it resolved or lemoned... GL,mD |
Thanks motor d
It's gotten to the point where I've stopped being pissed. "I used to be amazed..... now I'm just amused" I guess it would be a real issue if I didn't have a second and third means of transportation. It is a pain though. Oh I mentioned to the SA that I have a road trip planned the end of this month and asked if my X wasn't repaired if I could take the loaner on my trip California to New Mexico.... to my surprise he said nooooo he also said that my car would be ready by then......... survey says..... Buuuuuuzzzzzzz I DON'T think sooo |
hyundai's have some really good deals right now!!!!!!

:wtf: Why would I even consider a hyundai???????:loco:

My X5 won't be looked at until Monday, but if I can glean any information on my X5, i'll be sure to relay them to you. |
Thanks nra good luck.
Wagner.......... :thebird: karma is a MF |
Ok...finally got my X5 looked at by a new dealership. They seem to think they have found the problem with the dying battery. The technician spent the past 2 days testing the car to see what is drawing a current from the battery and they said it was the TCU. They're replacing it under warranty. Not completely sure what the TCU does, but if that was what was causing the current draw, Eddybilt, you might want your service tech to try looking there. Good luck!
|
Quote:
|
Nra Thanks.... just left a message for my SA....We will see what happens...
|
Some more information...on my service receipt, the tech noted that the TCU was drawing 600mAs and causing the car not to sleep. Pulled fuses one by one and checked current draw. When he reached the fuse for TCU, the current draw decreased. Replaced the TCU and the draw was at 30mAs and within acceptable limits for sleep mode.
|
NRA just got a call from SA He stated that my car doesn't have a TCU. He also said that the mechanic know's were the problem is....THIS TIME..... The car goes to sleep but the radio comes on...... sounds like more BS to me. Will keep you posted...... Looking at the Lemon Law now......

It took 3 trips to the idiot dlr and 3 attempts at a "download" fix, but it's worked fine all these years. No idea if your prob is even in the same ballpark, but not out of the question, imo. GL,mD |
News Flash...... Lemon Law Attorney is getting involved. More details to follow. Strong case under Magnuson Moss Warranty Act and Possible California Lemon Law.

It's all over BMW brought the car back and I'm now the owner of a 2008 Toyota Highlander. I'm gonna miss my Beemer ..... I have to admit BMW does stand behind their product.....I might be back later in life..... maybe after the toyota wheels fall off.... or I hit the lottery...... Good Luck to you all... Good Bye.
