I'll have to find out for sure about the panaroma roof thing...the 04's are more than she's wanting to spend for a used rig - remember that whole sensible girl thing ;) I myself am into performance (my car is lowered w/ H&R and Bilsteins, rebuilt whole suspension w/ Powerflex bushings), so a harsh ride is fine w/ me, it's her that i'm not sure about. We rented a Cherokee SRT8 when we first flew out here to prospect the idea of moving to Boise, and she thought "I was driving it hard" because of how it handled the bumps, curbs, etc....so she's gonna learn the hardway when she's an owner.

'lifetime fill fluid' - yeah right
6th gear for manuals - came in later...get that one

That' all I have. The rest is going to be things you will already be familiar with as a 740il owner.

- OSV/PCV, whatever you wanna call it - same issues w/ us
- Valve covers - ditto, unless they're not leaking into the sparkplug holes
- CV boots - not an issue, but we're also not sitting a foot+ above the ground
- Final stage resistor - common problem in the E34 M5 I had before the 740iL
- Automatic transmission and lifetime fluid - :iagree: Not sure if you guys do it here, but we've found doing a complete drain and fill at 100k, filter and all, using Valvoline (not sure which exactly, red bottle) is compatible w/ the Esso the stock tranny uses, and costs 1/4 the price

- I'd LOVE to find a stick 3.0, but she's against it because she swears she'd never learn how to drive it. While i'm assuming the trannies are COMPLETELY different being AWD, has anyone ever swapped in a 6spd from the 540/M5 into an X5 and made it a strictly RWD vehicle? A handful of 7 guys have, which is another dream mod to my list.

Hey you are talking my language!

My old neighbor was some Soviet rally racer in the old days, and he asked me if I had considered said RWD conversion. I think going to the 300hp version of the inline 6 with manual trans and 2wd would be:

a bunch more power
a lot less weight
highly entertaining

Our 5 speed X5 is my wife's daily driver. She wouldn't have it any other way - but she started manual trans driving in a little SLK so she got addicted. But if yours doesn't see the light just yet, go with as many gears as you can. On the highyway, these things run smooth but the RPMs make it sound like the engine is working really hard. I turn 3k or so in 5th. at 70mph. I wish it had a shorter throw shifter like an M3, but oh well.

It'd be my pleasure bro.

Well it is your lucky days guys. BMW apparently read this post and created a car just like you described. 300 h.p., rear wheel drive, reduced weight, and 6-speed manual . They are going to call it the e39 540i and it should be in show rooms as we speak.

What is the 4.6is add-on kit?

FSETH 04-11-2008 12:25 AM

4.6is aero kit is the lower front and rear valance that is painted to clolor match the X. In Dblock's case it is the blue portion you can see on the lower front bumper. You can barely see it on the back in the above photo. The 4.6is and 4.8is also feature fender lips on the back wheel that extend about an inch or so, where the 3.0 and 4.4 are flat. Here is a rear photo. Notice the lip over the rear wheel and the blue valance.http://xoutpost.com/gallery/files/3/4/side_right.jpg

Thanks dude.....I kid I kid!! ;) Well now I definately need to get the 4.6is add-on body kit, that rear valance thing looks awesome.

Hi M5James - If you are looking for a good Indy shop for BMW and don't know about Hurless Brothers they are the ones to go to in Boise! I was laughing at your comment about showing a BMW salesperson things they don't know - fits for this dealer. We've purchased all 4 of our BMW's out of state due to pricing and other factors. Service Dept is ok but pricey and parts are pricey too unless you use the web. GL on your search!

m5james 04-11-2008 03:44 PM

Thanks Joe, the Indy I use will mostly depend on where we purchase the vehicle. Little nick-nack parts I might run to the stealership if it's not worth shipping, otherwise I stick to online stores i've had success w/ in the part. Most I found via www.e38.org 's list shops to use. As for maintenance, being on my 3rd BMW, i've become quite efficient at doing my own work. Remodels have been a little slower lately, so i've even been offering my shade-tree mechanical services on Craigslist ;) http://boise.craigslist.org/aos/638804504.html
