My Next Mod - 4.6 Tips

So, I just bought these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...2BSI%26otn%3D2

How do they install? I checked this thread. Some are saying you have to weld them, some are saying to cut off the existing tips and weld, Phong says they slip right over the existing without the need for welding or screws. :dunno:

Has anyone else installed these same tips?

acitydweller 04-09-2008 10:54 AM

i looked at the same auction and decided against this mod after seeing how the other non IS x5's looked after this mod.

From what i read, you have to cut your current tips off to slip these on, then secure them on your pipes with a few welds behind the bumper. If you look at the parts diagram on the ebay item sale, it shows that the IS exhaust actually has a rectangular bracket which snuggly fits these tips. Without having that your welder will have to be a bit crafty in positioning and directing the tips with the bumpers off.

Let us know how your install goes. More testimonials just go into the pool of knowledge and experience here.

Good luck.

Bimmer360 04-09-2008 11:16 AM

^^ this is exactly what i did. Cut off the existing pipes and replace them with smaller in diameter pipes and welded. I bought it from the same vendor and love it michelle! Here are the pics of mine

Honestly Michelle, I really like the std. black tips; they're very Ferrari-esque. I Some of you overhype the 4.6/4.8 style and don't give the 4.4 look enough credit!

:trustme:

Brit6 04-09-2008 11:58 AM

Exactly, i have a 3.0i which the tips are discusting, but i bought a 4.4i exhaust and black chrome tips, i think they look really nice so i went with those over the 4.6is/4.8is tips.

I've gone back and forth with it. I really wanted them a few years ago, but decided to keep the standard black tips. After upgrading to 20" 87's last March, and recently checking out a few pictures, I decided I want something that will bring everyone's eyes down to also notice how awesomely wide my tires are. I think they complement the wide tires from the rear view. :driver:

Your call! Either will look good... Just take off your mudflaps first though if you wanna show off the tires

(Then replace the Michelins with Yokohama Advans since theyre 3/4" wider!)

I know. The mudflaps were on it when I bought it. I want to take them off, but don't want the mess on the side of the X!

I don't have Michelins anymore. I replaced them with Toyo Proxes in November.

vinuneuro 04-09-2008 12:46 PM

4.4 tips look good on a 4.4, 4.6/4.8 tips look good on a 4.6/4.8. The 4.4 tips look great imo, esp the black chrome sport ones.

M, you need a good welder. I remember seeing a post where the welder welded crooked and he had to go back.

Yup!!

I agree - I just bought the 4.6 tips from Michelle's link!!! lol good job Michelle -thanks for the link LOL.

I love these tips, anyone in NYC that knows a good welder (queens / LI preferrably)? It's funny because I think just last night I looked down at my 4.4 tips and said.. i gotta get the chrome tips.. I always liked the 4.6 tips so when I saw that I jumped at it. Should go well with the rest of my planned mods for exterior: 4.6 kit, allu running boards. Ext mods will have to wait for service I need to do though.

:iagree: Don't do it. Put them back up on Ebay. I think the dual tips on the 4.4 look the best and are the most classic.

IMO the 4.6is was the best looking e53 made, but the exhauset tips were never my cup of tea.

JTis 04-15-2008 11:07 PM

Another tangent to this question....I have a 4.6is....the current tips look like crap, despite polishing as best I can....would love to replace them with new......How simple or difficult is this in my case since it's not really a mod? Is there just a set screw or something? Looks like there's a small hole in it in the eBay ad.

OK M - I got my tips last night and got them welded at a shop for $60.. they had to cut the black tips off..

I like how they turned out.. sorry for the blackberry phone pic..

Brit6 04-22-2008 09:30 AM

Me too, its very rare that you see such nice dual black chrome exhaust tips on a suv. I just paid almost $200 for a new set of them to make it look awsome.

NICE! I got mine last night, too! I'm trying to decide if I should let my dad weld them or take them to a professional shop.

rastaFarai 04-22-2008 01:23 PM

Does your dad do exhaust? I'd lean towards a pro shop for the $60 - at least you can hold them accountable.

He can weld pretty much anything.

rastaFarai 04-22-2008 01:56 PM

then what's there to think about :-). From what I watched them do, its a simple job for him. As long as you have the tools to cut the existing tips. That looked like the hardest part of the job.. probably went through a couple of their blades..

jst2878 04-22-2008 02:15 PM

Michelle, you r going to love these tips. You will see the dual pipes which will be cut and visible but they can be spraypainted black and you'll never know the differencehttp://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/DSC00254.jpg

Michelle 04-24-2008 01:17 PM

I'm having them installed on Saturday. :dancing:

UPDATE: So, I went to the shop today to have the tips welded on. They opened the box and were wondering if there was supposed to be other parts included. They weren't sure by looking at the tips how they were going to do it. I told them that I know 10 other people who bought the same tips from the same eBay seller and they were able to install them.

So, they put the X up on the lift. They were very unsure which part of the tips and where to cut. Should they cut just the outer tips? Or the outer and inner tips/ Also, they didn't know what to weld the new tips to. Do they weld them directly to the face of the muffler.

SOOOO........rastafarai, jst2878, (and anyone else with a 4.4i who did this mod)....how did they do yours?
  1. Did they remove the bumper piece?
  2. What did they cut off?
  3. Where did they cut? Flush with the muffler?
  4. What did they weld the tip to?
  5. Did they weld on the inside of the new tip or outside?

I'm really glad they didn't just guess what to do and half-ass it. The guys seemed really concerned about doing a quality job. He asked if I could find out from you guys how you did it and to get some pictures.

I won't have a chance to go back for two weeks...I'm in Richmond last week at the NASCAR race.

chefwong 04-26-2008 03:42 PM

Michelle -

U need to go to a better shop . Possibly if you're lucky around your parts and have a shop that specializes with exhausts and or a performance/tuning oriented shop...

Your questions are very a/b/c simple questions and any competent technician should know the answers to the ones you just posted. The only factor in question how far do the tips stick out and that is moreso dependant on either his decision on yours IMO......

ONE MORE PIECE OF ADVICE M. On the inside of your tips, make sure your installer sprays the inside of your tips with hi temp matte black paint.

It's all in the details......the details.......

The same guy that can't figure out how to put them on is suppose to paint them now, that is an accident waiting to happen
The next Q's would be:

- How do I paint them?
- Where do I paint them?
- What kind of paint?
- How many layers?
- How long to dry?

:)

jst2878 04-28-2008 09:09 AM

michelle. He needs to cut the stock tips off at the same point where the tips are welded but you have to check the distance the new tips will stick out. A plumbers tape measure(wooden made) and find a sweet position that u are happy with

chefwong 04-28-2008 09:49 AM

Wagner. Thanks for the ~joke of the day~ ;-)

rastaFarai 04-28-2008 09:54 AM

Sorry for late response, answers below. The spray paint is a good idea, to bring with u or have them do it after they cut the dual exhaust. It's the one step I wish I had done, but I'm just going to get some hi temp paint and spray them.

THEY LOOK GREAT sitting in the box in my X5. I haven't had a free weekend to get them installed. I'm going to look at Justin's at the meet on Saturday. Then I'll find somewhere and try to get it done during the week.

You can't find a how to section in this group and take it to a local muffler shop or gas station. I would think that the person who services your farm tractors could do this as well.

My dad could more than likely do it with no problem...he's been welding for 30+ years on the farm equipment. I'm just too scared to let him!

Why this is not high teck work, he just need to be sure not to melt/burn the plastic trim, which I am sure he already knows.
