Can you please do this test on your X5?

i had my X serviced twice in the last 7 days for one thing, clunking noise in the left front wheel area when i turn my steering wheel from all the way left to the right (and then back and forth, like wiggling it). Dealer replaced the front thrust arm bushing, both sides, didnt fix the sound, brought it back in. Yesterday, they replaced the left tie rod because they said there was a little bit of a play when shake the tires... went this afternoon to pick up my X hoping the noise will be gone, its still there....

the SA called the shop supervisor, and he apologized to me when i showed the X still making the noise. he took the X back and just when i was about to leave the lot on a brand spanking new 530, the super came back and asked me to come with him inside the shop, JMK has a very clean shop.
he let me try my test to all X5s inside and all of them are making this sound when i shake the steering wheel, and those X5s are in because of diff issues, and man, theirs are louder than what i hear from my X. the super even called his wife at home to try their X5 too, and had the same noise... so i was a little bit convinced that it is normal, or is it really?

i would appreciate if u guys can try it on ur X and let me know if you hear some clunking noise on the front left wheel area. to test it, you should start your X, radio off, all windows closed. turn your wheel all the way to the left then start turning it left to right, right to left, like a kid pretending to be driving. again, you dont need to drive your X, leave it a P (park). thanks...

Not normal on mine.

Vonbimmer 04-10-2008 11:42 PM

Mine did it, but not very loud.

jayjay_dee 04-11-2008 12:02 AM

mine was not very loud too, but its audible especially when the radio is off. those other X5s i tried inside the shop was a lot worse than mine.

No clunks here, on our old '01...
I hear the sound of the power steering working, the tires moving, steering working,
but, no clunks or sounds that would lead me to think something is amiss.

Agree with mrbmw - try sway bar link

Was the front thrust arm bushings and the left tie rod replaced under warranty or are you paying?
Definitely find another dealer to work on your X.
Hunting expedition is what I would call it.
They may be good at giving you loaner and doing warranty stuff but being done right the first time also counts.

Bimmer360 04-11-2008 11:11 AM

mine is normal, it doesnt do that kind of sound, mine is 01 4.4i and never been replaced.

jayjay_dee 04-11-2008 11:14 AM

everything was paid under warranty, Warranty Direct...

again, i tried 5 or 6 X5s and they all have that sound, worse than mine... and that convinced me that its normal somehow... thats why i need more input from you guys... also, the supervisor gave me his business card, just in case i would bring back my X, so he would see to it that my X will taken care of... he even hooked me up with a can of silicone spray...

My X drives better now except for that sound when its parked.

Vonbimmer 04-11-2008 09:09 PM

Just wanted to add I can only hear mine when rocking the wheel back and forth with the car off. Once running there is nothing but the movement and PS noise.

If I wiggle my steering wheel on my 4.6is, I get a little play and a clicking noise...but I dont think this is the same thing. However, on occasion, I do get a judder when turning the wheels when the car is parked or when going from reverse to drive

dpats 04-13-2008 04:09 PM

There was no noise, nothing more than the usual sound of the wheels turning.

E55AMG2 04-13-2008 07:20 PM

I decided to check it myself with a help of a friend who's a mechanic, sway bar link looks in pretty good condition, so its out of the question now. He told me
it could be d gear box making d sound. Do u guys think its a possibility?
I just wanna get rid of that sound.

I have the same sound on mine just recently. I tried the dealer and he said i'm overplaying it...that it is normal...now mind you, i've been to the dealer 4 times already in the month of april and maybe he's just giving me the cold shoulder since my car is still under warranty.

did you ever get this figured out E55AMG2?

E55AMG2 05-06-2008 11:13 PM

the shudder? No...apparently thats torque being applied to the front wheels while the car is still and the wheel is being turned...and its "normal". Im not sure what steering system the 4.6 has, it feels like a rack and pinion. If it is, then the clicking is the play in the rack which you can do nothing about.

NMWX5 05-07-2008 01:06 AM

My 04 4.4 is making the clunk noise too. It happens when turning the steering wheel almost all the way when parked and when driving slowly, like when parking. I noticed it for awhile now and was planning to bring it to the dealer as well.

Anyone know the fix so we can avoid multiple visits to the dealer?

E55AMG2 05-07-2008 11:23 AM

how about someone make a video of the clunk noise so that others can see if they have it too.

been to the dealer twice, the master technician even brought me inside the shop, tried at least 5 Xs, they all have that sound, even louder than my X, so that convinced me "that time" it was normal.

but then again, i think no sound is normal...

fast4d 05-07-2008 02:36 PM

we've had this noise for the longest time. I replaced every suspension arm, ball joint, tie rod. this eliminated some of the noises but one still remained. a big f-ing clunk when we hit a driveway or turning at slow speeds.

our dealer actually found it at the steering shaft. they replaced it and ALL noises are gone!!!! I looked at the old one and there's a joint there. not like a U-joint but a joint of some sort.

I had the same problem with mine (3.0d 2002) around 90 000 km (56 000 miles). Especially when I turned on the left at low speed.

The dealer changed the steering box (taken under waranty  ) and the noise is gone.

;o) Stf.

Clunks and clicks when moving slowly (parking) on close to full lock on my 2003 X5 sport 3.0d was the anti-roll (sway) bar moving sidways. I replace the mounting bushes (mounts to the chassis) cost in UK £25 for parts and about 1 hour labour. I have been told by an indepentant BMW service engineer that this is VERY common on X5's. If you get the noise when going over bumps then it is the sway bar links as well.
