Hi, im thinking about tackling that steering wheel noise issue myself... anyone got any ideas on how to begin taking off the steering wheel to get to the clock spring...??? do I have to disconnect the battery and the air bag..?? If I disconnect the battery will i need the code for my nav/radio..?? any tips would be great..

try this http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/i...003-style.html

I had a similar problem with the steering column making clicking sounds when I turned with the blinker one, it counted every revolution. I took the car to the dealer and they got half the amount of clicking sounds to disappear...

Hey mrbmw, I dont have the clicking sounds but it sounds like the pair of denim jeans rubbing or somekind of swishing sound everytime I turn the wheel...

i took my steering wheel apart to check out this same problem.
yes you need to disconnect the battery and remove the airbag.
you will need a large breaker bar and a 16mm socket. the instructions linked above are what i used.
i took my "clock spring" mechanism apart. it was he** to get it back together. i do NOT recommend doing this. However, having said that, i put a ton of silicon grease (not liquid) inside and it cured the problem. every once in a while it comes back but then i just do a full left to right and back lock to lock turn and it seems like it must re-distribute the grease because the noise goes away immediately.
good luck.
