Rattling Sound?

I have an '01 X5 3.0. When I have the vehicle in Drive and at a complete stop, there is a rattle. As soon as let me foot off the brake, accelerate, or put it in neutral or park...the noise stops. Any ideas what this could be? Any information would be helpful..thanks in advance!

where is the rattle coming from? Isolate the sound to just one area of the car. My rattle was a light one, but very bothersome at times. It turned out to be my key in the ignition. It had just enough space to where it rattled enough to piss me off. Dealer took it out and tightend it up, but came back after a year. I just turn the music up and its gone.

Hi everyone!

Finally I've got rid of this terrible sound that bothers too much people who has BMW X5 !!!!
I've read tons of articles on the Internet trying to find a solution. No use. Either those guy
who knows the Secret simply don't want to share the knowledge or nobody could manage
to fix this problem.

This is the f****** Rubber Mounting. Look at it!

It got worn and caused a lose connection, which allowed Hydro-Steering-oil pipe

to rattle, to knock, to jingle. This sound has been driving me crazy for the whole last year.
I've personally spent almost $1,000 for nothing paying BMW Service mechanics who either
know NOTHING or just want to earn as much as possible on fixing what mustn't be fixed.

Everybody! If you have a MARBLE CAN sound coming from an engine bay while accelerating
or going up-hill at 2,200 and 3,000 rpm you should check the condition of Rubber Mounting
first. You don't even think of VANOS, Knock/Ping Sensor, Timing Chain Tensioner, Spark
Plugs, Vacuum stuff, Oil thickness, Fuel Filter, Engine Management Control (EMC), O2 Sensor,
and etc.
Check the Rubber Mounting! It may ease your life right away. If so, please, let me know.

Hey MoonTooSoon,

Can you describe the sound? i have this rattle sound when my rpm is 3200 roughly when in 4th gear it makes this ratteling sound like a ratched that gets faster and faster and disapears when the rpms drop so nothing when in park or neutral and you rev the engine only under load...

That was just a rattling from beneath. You lift up your baby, take off the bottom, and jerk or move all reachable parts for searching a lose... good luck! :stickpoke

Thanks....the one thing i have noticed is that you have to warm up the engine realy well like if the dial is at 90C in the center then hammer (0-70mph pulls) and voila the noise starts...i feel like maybe its the same thing your describing the powersteering line thats down there....but i cant think of what else can expand taht will rattle it has to be connected to the heat or pressure build up....then rattle...but will definitly check that tomorrow...thanks agian

a winter's cold may play a role...

After hours of search i found that the rattle is coming from the right side by the exhaust manifold from there i cant pin point. I can say that if the manifolds are cold (the cats are there too) then there is a very very tiny sound but once you do some 0-60 pulls ofcourse after the engine warmed up properly then do it and park you can rev the engine at exactly 1200-1300 rpm and you get that sound the sound comes only after you hit that rpm and let go then the back pressure seems makes something rattle next to the second set of exhaust manifolds in the back.

PS: this started very abruptly also...as in the last 3-6 days i started to hear it once i started to spend a lot of time in traffic the engine would heat up very nicely with in its limit no over heating that is.

Hi. I'm not a auto-mechanic. I got rid of "my rattling" a while ago. So, I'm just not following this topic any more. Yes, I did my researches and collected all the possible information on rattling. Sorry, I haven't kept it. But I remember, that one of causes was a problem with a thing (don't remember the name) that is installed in exhaust system to control emissions. It's made of ceramic that can be cracked due to its quality and age. Check this.
