Tranny Problem
 

Please help...
2003 X5 3.0, 106,000 miles
When I first start off in Drive engine reves before the first gear catches. Strange thing is once it catches once no more problems until I turn off and let it sit for several hours. Any idea what would cause this? :dunno:

To be honest, I think its because your car is still cold. Car needs to warm up a little bit. I thinks your fine. Just take it easy in the begining. Im not a pro, but this might be it. Good luck

It is normal, it just is a common issue for most of 03 x5 or 5series tranny with 3.0 motor. In cold winter time, all you get to do is when you put on "D" then wait for 3 - 5sec. It only happens the "delay" when you are first to put in gear after your car stop for a certain long periord. After your X5 get into the gear then you won't have the delay no more until next morning you start the car again!!!

these are symptoms of LOW fluid. your tranny is low on fluid. Take it to a reputable transmission shop, and make sure they know how to check the fluid level and add fluid. After you drive the fluid warms up and expands, that's why the symptom disappears . Don't wait any longer, you could damage your tranny. GOOD LUCK,

Check the fluid level.

Thanks to all the the replies. The local BMW shop just changed the Tranny fluid, so I'll take it back to have the verify it is topped off. Other than that sounds like a problem I just have to live with.

This is what the "head" mechanic said @ BMW by me.....

Everytime you start the car no matter what the temp is outside DO NOT have the A/C or heat on until the RPMs make that drop to 500-600. Its very obvious to hear the drop for those of you who do warm up their car before taking off....especially in the winter the RPMs will make 2 drops not one like in the spring or summer.

I have always done this since day one....Honestly I think it makes a hell of a difference!

First fluid level must be checked, if low this will also cause delay in initial engagement, in forward and in reverse. If fluid level is full, then internal hydraulic problem is obvious.
