My last change was $100, with new filter and synthetic oil.

Guys, guys, guys...the X5 oil filter is the easiest thing on the planet to change!

In all seriousness, if you can do a lightbulb you can do a simple oil change:
- drain old oil into pan
- unscrew old filter
- screw on new filter
- pour in new oil

I left a few minor details out, but that's really the essence of it isn't it?! Why pay those ridiculous prices to the dealer when you can put those hundreds and hundreds of dollars back into your family's savings??

Even for the technically challenged it will take you about 30 minutes and under $50 including premium synth. Just be sure to use the actual BMW filters instead of cheap replacements or you'll get about 30 seconds of knocking noises when the engine starts in the morning.

You can do it!

The last oil change I had was about $90 here in Pittsburgh. And that was at the dealer. I will do my own changes in the future.

My last oil change

My last oil change was $1400 (aka the straw that broke the camels back), and that was with an extended warranty. They fixed half of the problems under warranty, but the "collapsed hoses" were $1400 to fix. I never seemed to have just an oil change, the inspections always found something that needed fixing. That was on 02 with less than 60,000 miles. So as the wife's CPO expired on her 325, we leased a 08 328i, back under full maintenance, and I gave up my 02 X5 for an 08 GMC Acadia, price of oil change is $39, and that is with a tire rotation. Yes I could do it my self, and before kids I did, but now I have more important things to do. I am glad to be rid of my X5 also, $80 a tank every week was getting old, now I am down to $30 a week, uses less gas, and does not require premium. Plus I have lots of cool toys to play with, and a lot more room, things that matter more.

DIY works only if your X5 still has a dipstick (in the engine compartment) - starting to read/hear problems due to under/over fill.
