Service engine soon light

Thie "service engine soon" indicator light appeared on my dash a couple of days ago. Not the regular-scheduled service, which I'm still like 10K miles away from.

So, I called the service department for an appointment and could not get one for a week and half. They said it would be fine to wait, as long as the car wasn't stalling or idling funny. True?

In your experience, what does kind of problems does this light generally indicate? Thanks for your input.

Could be as simple as a loose gas cap. With the engine off, open and close your gas cap tightly. Hopefully that was it to set up the SES light and the light should go off in 2-3 days of normal driving. If not, then follow up with your BMW Service dept.

If you are really worried what it might be, you may want to p/u a scanner such as an Actron OBD2 autoscanner that was suggested to me in another thread. The list of error messages is listed on this website. That way at least you know if it is critical or not.
