Can Anyone Please tell me what is this part?
 

I have noticed My 2002 4.4i is leaking some kind of oil again. I just got under and noticed this part with signifcany leakage. Can you please help and give me an idea of what could this be?

About 2k miles ago I got roped by a dealer to replace a leaking v-pan...now this...I am wondering if it is related or competely separate...

That appears to be the bell housing of your transmission. Look North for the answer to your leak. If it is oil (Dark Brown) not transmission fluid (Red). I would suspect the oil/air separator and/or asociated hoses.

Thank You! Went to the dealer and they stated it is a main engine seal ...result..they want $1900 to fix it..sound right?

Also told me I need 4 New Oxygen Sensors at $450 each...is this real?

I thought there were only 2 Oxygen sensors and they retail for under $200 each btw.

i just bought 4 oxygen sensors for around $80 each from autohausaz.com. Can't believe those dealers...

1. Find an independent, your dealer is ripping you off.
2. You say oil is leaking "again", did you already have an oil leak repaired? The valley pan leak you mention would have resulted in coolant (green fluid) leaking along the back of the manifold and down the bell housing, not oil (common on 4.4)
3. Why did they say you need new O2 sensors, is it throwing a code?

You need to find an independent that does good work on BMW's and knows the X5. Best move I ever in my opinion. In talking to a few BMW mechanics through some of the BMW forums and clubs, they always laugh and tell me how the stealerships are completely screwing their customers on what they charge, the work they do, and the real time it actually takes to do whatever jobs they are doing. Never mind the quality of workmanship.

I had the same problem 2 years ago. I had warranty at the time so I was lucky. But I'd get an indy. BMW charges way to much. My indy said he can do for about 600 to 700 dollars total bill. What costs a lot is that they need to completely remove the tranny to get to the rear main seal. Good luck...
