$1,200 to repace a waterpump?

That's the quote I just got from an independent shop. They have done well for me in the past, but this seems steep. The quote includes thermostat and hoses too.

its simple DIY . .there is guy selling waterpump on ebay cheap (genuine BMW rmfd) ... i would say $150 should cover pump/ t-stat / coolant / distilled water / dont know how much hoses cost .. but its an easy DIY with right tools ... my guestimate wud be $500 at indie ...

Too much imo. The waterpump runs for around $110 and the thermostat about $65, so the total including labor should be much less than $1200.

I'll trade you... the water pump alone on my F355 is more than that :-(

Did they give you a breakdown on the parts and the labor? Call the dealer and see what they charge, the indy may not be that far off.

good opportunity to do the valley pan at the same time.

Those are the prices according to realoem. (for a 3.0i though.)

I should probably be repairing X5s for a job. I did my waterpump on my 3.0, plus the tstat and a new belt for about $250 in parts and it took 3 hours, having never done it before.

I'd get a second opinion, if you can afford the time before the pump is dead.

CharlieHustleX5 05-01-2008 02:46 PM

Wow, at an indie they want that much?

Well, thats not as bad as my quote for an alternator replacement from the dealer... $1480 for an alternator and 2 belts. Not even including tensioner or idler pullies.

Right. Sounds like you did that one.
We don't even know if it's V8 :)

Anyway, water pump should be few hours of labor for expierenced mechanic. 1200 could be if it's V8 and valley pan involved
