X5 vs. F150
Well, after 3 weeks of having my new tranny installed, this is what happened last Thursday. While waiting on vehicle three to four cars ahead of me to turn left, this F150 comes flying up behind me. When I noticed it in my rear view mirror, I knew there was no way it was going to stop in time. Luckily the lady did swerve some, but not quick enough. She caught about 2/3 of my rear end and spun me 90-degrees and she shot off to the side of the road. No one seriously hurt thank goodness. Once again, BMW proves its worthiness when it comes to safety.

that good no one seriously hurt
|
Glad nobody was hurt!
The X5 is a tank. The rear of the X held up great for getting blasted by an F-150. I would have expected the damage to be much worse. The F-150 looks pretty messed up. By the way, I like your Georgia Bulldog license plate. |
crumple zones doing what crumple zones do best....saving the passenger. Glad everyone was fine.
|
Just because the Ford is messed up does not mean the BMW is better, todays cars have crush zones to reduce impact, The Ford did what is was supposed to do.
Glad no one was hurt, and its to bad that the guy driving the 150 was jerk and rear-end you. |
I could be wrong, but I don't think the F-150 has the same sort of crumple zones you are thinking about on a car. Trucks like that usually have solid steel frames that run the length of the vehicle. F-150's typically don't crumple like our Bimmers do, so to see that sort of damage to the F-150 surprised me a little.
...and by the way Blue, A) It was a woman driving the F-150 not a guy and B) you can' even compare the safety of an F-150 to an X5. Not even close. The X5 IS much safer (and better). |
Notice that the compartment is fine, that is the goal of a crumple zone. See how the hood buckled, instead of being driven back into the windshield, the fender pushed outward, notice the badge being blown out.
|
If you look at those photos the only part of the truck that crumpled was the top half (hood and side fenders) which are just thin metal. Notice that the front bumper doesn't look pushed in at all. Like I said I am pretty sure the F-150 is a body on frame design where the solid box frame runs from the front bumper to the rear bumper. I am not sure how much that area can give. Now the area above the frame like the hood can crumple very easily depending on the angle of the accident. I do know that Ford made some changes in this design from the previous model though.

Glad you are ok.

Don't mean to get off topic here, but Wagner and Blue were right. There are some form of crumple zones on the new F-150. What I have a hard time understanding is does the solid steel frame crumple, or just the body sitting on the frame? Sorry to get OT.
The F-150 is manufactured with the prerequisite crumple zones, as well as a collapsible steering column, pyrotechnic pretensioners in the belts, adjustable head restraints, and steel door beams for side impact protection. http://www.pickuptrucks.com/IMAGES/2...150/f15025.jpg |
Dawg,
Glad everyone involved came out OK. Would be interested in seeing the total tally $$$ from the adjuster. And what you plan to do in terms of getting it fixed vs. taking the payout and gunning for a new X down payment:thumbup:. I've been rear-ended twice in previous vehicles (Honda, Toyota), and it's alway super annoying how folks just do NOT pay attention to keeping their distance:cussing:. They think Newtonian physics is for "other" people, it does not apply to them. Personally, I think aggressive tail-gating should be pursued by the cops much more vigorously than plain old speeding. FSETH, I'm not an expert either, but I would assume you're thinking of older models of the F-150. Nowadays, there are universal safety standards where all vehicles have to comply with the same basic crash test safety standards. If the crash test dummy in the F-150 "dies" at 35 mph because the truck did not crumple in front, Ford would have a problem on its hands. But then again, this IS the infamous Ford company. I believe half the case histories studied by 1st and 2nd year-law students are "Mr._______ vs. Ford Motor Company" :D. |
x54.4blue - not sure what point you are trying to argue because no where did I say the X was "better". I just made the obvious point that the F150 sustained more damage than the X5.
StanF18 - repair quote without tearing it down was around $5000. I just sunk $4000 on a new tranny into it, so replacing it is not an option right now (not to mention I am still making payments on the vehicle). Also, this person was not tailgating. We had been stopped for a good 5-10 seconds before she nailed me. Just wasn't paying attention to the fact that we were stopped. Instead of replacing her, I am going to take the medical settlement and buy her a set of new wheels!!! |

Definitely new rims and tires!!! |

I'm sure they saw the BMW roundel, crapped their pants and decided to make the offer. See..... owning a BMW has it's advantages, right! |
Your bumper probably would have suffered more damage if you did not had the hitch. Hitch requires a change of rear bumper insert.

Broads in fullsize SUV's and trucks....idiots and a complete waste of gas and space on the freeways. Unless she's carrying kids EVERYDAY, it's called a Civic. Leave the trucks to people who actually know how to manuever them around poles, other cars, etc. ;)

Broads, like trucks are just for men are you for real? |
I had to read your reply a few times due to the lack of punctuation, but yes......if some girl did that to me, being called a broad or a chick would be the nicest thing that came outta my mouth after someone did that to my car. I don't know any reason why a girl would NEED a truck, an SUV/SAV maybe, but a fullsize truck.....overkill for a daily driver. It's like giving my grandmother an M5...what the hell is she going to do w/ it?
|
Finally got final word on my X - $9100 worth of repairs and will be ready in 3 weeks. This shop has done previous body work for me and has done a good job thus far. I was really dreading having to find another vehicle, so I am quite happy with them saving her.
Guess I can get my new wheels and tires ordered!!! |
Well, you'll have nice new factory fresh panels with factory paint! Will get rid of any "road rash" you may have had on the backside before the accident.

Last I checked this is, "the land of the free". If you would like to walk around in a dress on the weekend, I don't think any woman driving a full size pick up would complain. Unless it was a white dress and it was before Memorial day. |
I have heard that rear end collisions cause the auto trannies to fail prematurely...Sorry to hear about ur incident so shortly after replacing ur tranny....Glad everyone is ok.
|
Man I hope not!!! Of course I do have a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty...
|
Thats cool, should cover it then...no worries if it fails.
|
WOW these X5's are tanks
|
What is this? Its like the 3rd or 4th X5 thats been rear ended. Mine was rear ended 2 weeks ago. :yikes:
|
My accident happened last year.
