You lost me between Step 3 and Step 4. In Step 4 it appears that the radiator has been removed. This would make it very easy to take the picture in the DIY. I got to that point and put it all back together (I had to take my daughter to work). Now my "Check Coolant Level" light is on.

Also ran the OBD II scanner and "No Codes". I'm at a loss. I topped off the radiator fluid I drained out in the first step. I am running cool so the thermostat is 'open'. '02 X5, 3.0, 115,000 miles.

No need to remove the radiator, I was able to bypass that step. I do not recommend doing that Coz not much room. That's your call.

Never mind. I read further and saw step 8 reference a Bentley manual for radiator removal instructions. I ordered a BMW Tech Manual from e-Bay. DVD should be here in a few days, that should cover it! Also fixed the check coolant thing by reading another post about the bleed screw. Topped up with another 1/2 gallon of antifreeze so I should run cool till next weekend when I do it again.

No need to use that scanner since no failure in the system but just need to top off. If you didn't fill it all the way, you just need to add more. Let me know if this solves the issue.
