turn off low beam lights
any DIY way to turn off the low-beam lights and use xenon only?
the lights look very dim and seem to have no particular use except to look yellow. I know D-R-L can be disabled via computer but how about disabling low-beam when I turn on the xenons at night? high-beam should still remain usable of course. |
The low beams are the xenons, the high beams are halos.

I dont think there is a way to disable the low beam because that's what you need to drive at night. High beam is the inner bulbs (closest to the grills). You can disable the DRL but not the low beam.

I read this thread and honestly was confused. Correct me if I'm wrong but the low beams are xenon only. So turning off the low-beam lights and use xenon only makes no sense. As was said "that's what you need to drive at night".
Perhaps a clarification is in order. |
i think you're referring to the "position lights"

a good solution is to get cool blue bulbs. that's what i did. |
Sorry, I was refering to the bulbs in the housing closest to the grill (high-beam I understand).
When I turn on the Xenon low-beams, the high-beam housing 5 watt lights come on but actually I dont need them and want to disable them when turning on the Xenon lights. I guess to simply take them out would not be a good idea but rather disable it? I still want to make use of high-beam of course but not the 5 watt lamps. |
DRL can be switched off but when I turn to xenon at night, I dont want the 5 watts to come on too (as they are on at switch position 1 and xenon is at switch position 2)
sorry for the confusion |
Ummm here, I guess: Pos 1 - Parking lights, DRL's go off, halos come on as well as the the signal lamps (in the states at least) Pos 2 - Full low beams come on, halos stay lit, so do signal lamps. The high-beam (closest to the inside) non Xenon bulbs (as you have bi-xenons on a X5 starting in 2004) they are the DRL's the halos are entirely different so messing with the halo bulbs will not effect the high-beams. I don't know why you would want to disable the halo's as it sounds like much more trouble then it is worth. You should take a picture of your car and circle the part you mean. |
hi

this is the European/UK Setup and I have a 2002 4.4i model
it may be different to the DRL concept in the states switch 1: Light goes on number 1 in pic (small lights, maybe 5 watts, not xenon, no idea what they are called but they are yellow and ugly, kinda like parking lights) switch 2: Xenon goes on, number 2 in pic, but light number 1 stays on too. (I can operate high-beam and then number 1 becomes high-beam) I want to use switch 2 xenon light but i do not want the light number 1 to come on at the same time, too. |
I know it will be different on the e70, but the bulb he is talking about it the bulb inside the halo closest to the grille in my avatar.
