Extended Maintenance Plan? Worth it...Please Help
I need the expert opinion of the forum...
Buying a CPO 2005 X5 4.8is with 42,800. In service date Feb 2005. So I have 7,200 miles or 8 months left on the Free maintenance. I drive about 1,250 miles per month. Dealer wants $1,895 for the 6 year or 100,000 miles extended maintenance. Dealer charges the following for service: oil service $180 Insp I $425 Insp II $600 Brake job $1,800 !! So it this extended maintenance worth it? What would you do? I only plan to keep the vehicle for 3 years (so about 87,800 miles on the odo when I sell it.) |
in your case you will sell the car next three years is not worth it.
|
But if a brake job is needed in those 3 years, that's $1,800 right there.
|
EXtended warrenty don't cover brake jobs .
|
This is extended maintenance not the warranty.
|
If you are mechanically inclined at all, you can change your own brakes for about $400 (complete front and rear pads and rotors).
WIth your mileage estimates you would need about 3 oil changes (with BMW's recommended intervals) for a total of $540, but you can also do that yourself and save a lot of money. Or you can take it to an indy shop and goet it done for under $100 You will also probably only need one inspection (if that) So if you can do some of these items yourself, I would say don't get it. Especially if you are sure you are going to sell at that mileage. I would only buy a warranty if I were going to use up all of the mileage as cars typically tend to break more with mileage and not age. |
well! you can do the brake your sefl for wayyy less. ( about $600)

I did mine with Centric rotors and Axxis pads for about $420 total. Also, $180 for an oil change is crazy high. Take it to an Indy shop if you don't want to do it yourself. |
This warranty does cover brakes.

The extended maintenance or the extended warranty? |
The extended Maintenance warranty.
|
extended maintenance covers brakes, wipers, services that are deemed necessary by the service interval data/etc.
extended warranty is the CPO preowned warranty, basically for anything big except it is NOT the same as the original warranty. check out this site for more clarification: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...y/Covered.aspx |

If you are keeping the car for the period where you will need brakes, and if you cop the maint deal and get stuff done by that pricey Stlr, then it may be a break even deal for you. If any of the above "telling the future" items don't occur, then they have made out. If the piece of mind is worth the 2Gs, it's your pick. But, probably not worth it since you are tossing it in 3 yrs or less. (Edit: Re: "Dealer wants $1,895 for the 6 year or 100,000 miles extended maintenance." That "6 yrs/100K miles" is the sum Total that the ext maint covers. That is, the program "picks up" at time of your current 'free maintenance' expiring soon, and lasts for 2 more years or 100K miles total, whichever comes up first.) As for those quoted repair prices by that stlr: they are high, even for a sltr, and any BMW Indie in your area could do them for about 30-50% less, if you choose not to get the ext maintenance, imo. Edit; sorry for being redundant. I didn't see the second page of posts on this thread. |
OK, I don't know if you can read the attachment, but it shows some repair work on the vehicle I am thinkinh of buying. Power window function, door trim, cup holder- all these things were repaired March 2008.

With the SUV market in a big hurt, you should be getting your 4.8is at a steal. I would get the maintenace package. btw.. regular oil changes are not included, that is if you change your oil frequent. Post your price and we will tell you if you are getting a good deal. |

There are three I am considering: CPO 2005 4.8is with 42,800 miles is $40,500. sport seats, no nav CPO 2006 4.8is with 14,200 miles is $47,000. comfort, nav Non CPO 2005 4.8is with 33,200 miles is $39,900. comfort, nav, load floor Which is the better deal? |
if i were you, i would wait a year or so or if you can afford an average of 10K more, you can get E70. Just my .2 cents.
|
if you're planning on keeping the car for a while, then go with either of the CPOs.
it all comes down to is $7k worth slightly newer, 30,000 less miles, comfort seats ($0), and factory nav ($1800 when new)? doesn't seem all that bad...talk it down |
I say choice 1 or 3, whichever is in better cond. You are only planning on keeping the car for 3 years and plan on having under 100k miles. All of them should be under the extended manufacturers warranty for at least 2 of those years as you don't plan on going over the allowed mileage, right? If you were going to keep the car for a long time, I would say pick the one with the lowest miles, but in your case the milage really doesn't matter that much as they are all fairly low.
Forget that extended maintenance plan and just take the car to an indy shop if you are not planning on keeping it for more than 3 years or 85k. The CPO extended manufacturers warranty (which you get purchasing CPO) is the important of the 2 warranties. If you really want to buy the maintenance plan, check to see if the brakes were changed on any of the X's you are looking at. That will be your biggest cost that the maintenance plan will cover. As I said before, you can get oil changes for under $100 and you will need 3 according to the mileage you plan on driving and when you plan on selling the car. So there is $300. You can change the brakes yourself for about $450. So there is $750. That is much cheaper than the maintenance plan. Even if you can't change the brakes yourself, you can go to an indy shop and get it done for much cheaper than the dealer adn the overall cost of 3 indy oil changes and 1 indy brake job would still be less than buying the maintenance warranty. Your call though. |
