When I'm looking for a more "spirited" drive, particularly with lots of cornering, I switch to Sport mode. I find it holds low gears much longer whether cornering, decelerating or accelerating...so the engine spends more time higher on the torque curve. When you get on the throttle, the response is much quicker...mostly because it is holding a lower gear. This makes for much better dynamics when driving hard. Of course, this also means that the tranny is not always racing to find the highest gear which is the case with "normal" mode...so this kills fuel economy.

in an effort to use less gas, i decided to try and drive in normal mode on my most recent fill up and i'm actually averaging WORSE gas mileage than in sport mode. i just started, so i'll see how the fuel econony is after half a tank.

after the half tank you will see alot more diff.( it will empty faster)

Funny how the Yanks on here always ignore any comments about UK fuel (gas) prices - they think they're hard done by at what equates to about 60p per Litre (yes, we are paying anything up to £1.25 per litre for 95RON!)

If you put it in sport mode, yet drive it like a 80 y.o. grandma, I don't think you will see any change that is benefitial.

However, if you are used to driving a maual transmission, and are driving hard, you might appreciate that it is not goingto change gears as often at inopportune times.

It is probably because many - if not most - Western European countries would fit inside a large US state.

I recently flew 2/3 of the way across the country (2179 miles from South Carolina to Las Vegas) and THEN drove to several US cities on the west coast. During that drive I put close to 3000 miles on my rental car.

I think that most Americans understand the high cost of fuel in Europe. I also think most Americans see it as not quite a hardship because you don't have to travel so far to get across your own country. Also, you have more choices than we do (our fault) for long and short distance travel.

As for sport mode.... it doesn't increase the actuators' speed on the throttle bodies like on the M cars does it? :stickpoke
