I think its either 50% or 35%. it definitely isnt 20. should search on here as well. its been stated before.

tint recommendations
35% for the fronts and 20% for the back window and rear passenger windows.
35% is whats considered legal for front windows in our state of WA. b |
Go with a 35% tint on the front windows. That will match the back perfectly.

Herre in uk we cant go more than 30% tint including the original tint on glass from factory so only way to stay legal is to have unpleasant contrast from front to back or just go without tints...................I'm all for safety but it's a bit OTT & really sucks IMO.

In NY State tints on the front windows are illegal. I believe the laws here states that you cannot have tints over 50% for any windows on cars. SUV, Vans, and station wagons are in a different class and can have tints on back windows. Since the lightest shade I can find here is 50% and the manufacturer lightly tints the front windows when car is equipped with AC, any tint I put in puts me over the limit and it will be illegal.
My previos car (05 Audi A6) I had it tinted at 35% all the way around and I was pulled over twice in the 3 years I had it. Some cops threatened to give a ticket for each window. Thats 7 summons all together counting the little window on the back door. Luckilly I have only gotten warnings to remove them and only once I had a cop use the tint meter. I know tinting the car will be illegal but I do not agree that they should be at this level. I think up to 35% should be legal and if you get pulled over then opening all windows and tunrning on the interior lights should be mandatory for tinted vehicles. This is for the safety of police officers. Before I did this they would approach the car with their hands on the gun due to the unknows of whats could possibly be pointing at them from the other side. |
Did you ever get this done? I want to do this too
|
I was told by a tint shop that the rears are 15%
(the tint gets darker with decreasing %) % corresponds to how much light is let in through the window... |

15% is very dark. |
I have OEM rear privacy glass, and when I got pulled over for my tints (because my front window tint is 12%) the officer measured the rears with his machine thing and discovered they were 38%. So I guess the rears are 38%..
And if you want to exactly match the rears, make sure to check if your vehicle already has factory UV tint (9%) in the front.. and factor that in. In my opinion though, the darker the better! |
I know this is the E53 forum but since you're talking about it - do you know if the E70 glass is already factory UV tinted and is it around 70% already? Damn NY state laws...
|
The E70 glass has 9% UV tint on the front two windows. Not sure about the rears. I assume if you have no privacy glass it is 9% as well. But if you have privacy glass I am not exactly sure. Should be in the 35-38% range.

Don't know how true it is but I've been told matching tint that's been on for a while is very difficult b/c the tint will change color with light. Had this issue on a previous car that had the window busted out to make the radio easier to get to :/ Plus, as someone else mentioned, the brand of the tint will vary in color too.
|
Factory tint is 20% black... simple..done..If you want to match it, get 20% black on the front 2 windows. Thats exactly what i have and it matches perfectly...
|
factory tint is not 20%. its not even tint from the factory, its privacy glass. And if you were to use a tint meter to measure it, you would find that the privacy glass measures at 38% (this info is for the e53s). not too sure about the e70s but they are around the same.
