Half Cold Air, Half Hot Air from Main Air Outlet
 

Recently, my '02 X5 3.0i started blowing hot air from the front passenger side
air vent during normal AC operation, but the driver side blows cold. Also the rear outlet seems to be blowing hot air also. Anyone have any idea what the problem may be?

Hasnt happened to me but it sounds like the final stage resistor.

Anyone else care to comment?

Final stage unit affects fan speed or can cause not operation at all. A month are so ago, I couldn't control fan speed - operated at just one level. Ordered and replaced Final Stage Unit and that took care of that. I ssems that maybe this time, it's something controlling an individual flap control for the passenger side temp setting.

I believe you are correct. It's not the FSR. What happens when you adjust the controls for the passenger side temp settings?

Temperature does not change; still hot air.
 

Just found out the there are separate stepper motors for controlling the driver and passenger side air temperature. Sounds like either its the stepper motor or control unit it is connected to.

Page Persona non Grata. He had the same thing happen to him and it was decided that the refigerant needs recharging.

yesterday i went to pick up my car the dealer and i came out with NO COLD AIR AT ALL. my SA looked at it and i had a defective aux vent he said...
same problem? they have the car now, i got put in a <weak ass> x3 2.5 for the weekend....

competent MBW dealer here, but I do as much maintenance as I can myself. If it's just a refrigerant recharge, they can handle that. Just want to find out as much as I can to determine whether I should take it in or get the part and fix it myself.

I had that exact same problem with my '02. As SANguru said, it was a refridgerant recharge and a repair of a leaking valve. Apparently this is quite common and for some reason, it is commonly the passenger side that goes teets up first. It was handled under warranty. I be chillin' now. :cool:
